So I will be obsolete in the new order. :D

Though the hydrogen ice crystal question won't be valid if global warming continues! :wow:

I also loved the patent question and I knew it was true. What a joke of a system...

WOuldn't the cancer question be debateable?

75. I think several of the questions are debatable.
To make this test more accurate, you should subtract 50 points from your score if you think that totally agreeing with the viewpoints of the person who wrote the quiz makes you a freethinker.

87. I agree... there are a lot of places where solid science doesn't back up
or deny the author's opinions.

I ended up skipping those that were ambiguously phrased or based on indeterminate evidence.

Still... even skipping 14 questions and out-right disagreeing with several of the cancer questions, I still scored over 80%.

That question is false and true, and just enhances the dishonesty and paranoia of the test maker.

27. 95% on this very poorly done, misleading, paranoid test
Some of these questions were asked in the same overtly misleading and dishonest way that some of the rightwing surveys are written.

Like the question on home buying as an investment. Very dishonestly done, since the question they are really asking is "Buying a home with a loan from a for-profit bank is one of the best financial investments"

It's a veryu dishonest question.

Also the question on the media accurately reporting the war in Iraq. Here's the qestion as it stands, "The mainstream news outlets (cable news, national newspapers, network news) in America accurately report war events in Iraq."

But what they really want to ask is: The mainstream news outlets (cable news, national newspapers, network news) in America accurately report war events in Iraq IN EVERY REPORT THEY MAKE, AND THEY REPORTING EVERY IOTA OF TRUTH ABOUT THE WAR.

As they have the question worded, it's actually true - the MSM *do* accurately report war events in Iraq. What they are guilty of is not telling the whole story, guilty of obfuscation, guilty of propagandistic spin, and the occasional outright lie.

32. 85% here, and I have a real problem with one of the questions,
the one concerning disease. Site claims that diabetes has grown in recent years, and it has indeed, but there are factors the site doesn't consider and to be truly fair, ought to consider.

First, it was much harder to diagnose BOTH types of diabetes in the past. The diagnosis recently of BOTH types is much easier now. Thousands of cases went undiagnosed in the past and still do, but is easier to positively diagnose now, so more people have diabetes--very simple explanation; no tin hats necessary.

Second; incidences of insulin-dependent diabetes are not growing appreciably (I will grant non-insulin dependent diabetes is growing rapidly in children and teens, but there is little correlation to insulin-dependent diabetes, the kind I have had my entire life), and the two types of diabetes are only marginally related.

I hear this stuff all the time, and I get pretty touchy about it.

It's an interesting test, I'll grant, but "I don't know" would be an incredibly valuable option, IMHO.

This test is in a lot of ways as much propaganda as that which it claims to abhor. So being a "free thinker" means answering their questions the way they want you to answer and swallowing their hyperbole about how I chug rocket engine fuel and cow pus with every glass of milk? Crap like this isn't any more "free thinking" than being a sheeple.

47. Man, some of the explanations are horseshit
In fact, you'd have to be pretty gullible to believe some of the crap that newstarget is apparently spewing.

Just as an example:

"Diabetes, for example, was exceedingly rare just a hundred years ago. Doctors often had to travel hundreds of miles to find a patient with the disease. Cancer and heart disease were similarly rare. Since our gene pool hasn't changed in a hundred years, the explanation for these disease must be found somewhere else -- namely, in our processed foods, lack of exercise and exposure to modern environmental toxins."

First of all, this is not true. 100 years ago, we largely had no way of diagnosing these diseases. Modern medicine has, gasp, advanced a lot in the last 100 years--just because we couldn't detect cancers doesn't mean they weren't there.

And most importantly, the number one reason why these diseases are more prevelant nowadays is because we live a hell of a lot longer, and these are primarily diseases of the elderly.

49. I think the "we live alot longer" is a myth
Alot of that statistic comes from comparing averages. The average in the old days was brought down by a much higher incidence of child mortality. Once a person reached the age of 20 in the year 1600 or so, they lived about as long as we do. The exception was women who, either having or using no birth control usually had a dozen kids between the age of 20 and 45 and often died in childbirth especially if they had twins at an advanced age. More people on average are reaching the age of sixty and ninety and so on which is not to say that we live longer. My paternal immigrant ancestor was born in 1705 and died in 1787. His great grandson on my line was born in 1811 and died in 1901. Yet that person's great-grandson, my grandfather, only reached the age of 80, as did his little brother and one of my uncles has died at the age of 73.

Anyway, I share their concern in this regard. It seems pretty clear that a large increase in diabetes is due to a huge influx of processed sugar into the American diet, even in places where you do not necessarily expect it, like Hamburger Helper. We also seem to be doing very little to stem the flow of carcinogens that our industry is bringing into our lives.

50. Not an unfair point
but it isn't right to discount the fact that there are many more adults living long lives than there were 100 years ago. This is obviously due to many different factors--and decreased child mortality and death in childbirth are certainly among these. But so are the terrific increases in preventive care and the discovery of drugs such as antibiotics.

Diabetes is the trickiest of the three examples. But my point stands--100 years ago, we had next to no idea of how the kidney worked, we had only rudimentary concepts of insulin or blood-sugar levels. This information was not realized until the 1920s! Of course there were fewer cases of "diabetes" before this!

Does the American high-sugar diet have something to do with increased cases of diabetes? Of course...but to say that it is the only factor is either ignorant or deliberately misleading.

Your GF score is 82.

Free Thinker
Welcome to the top 5%. You're a true free thinker and a person who is well informed about the reality in which you live. Although you may have been easily manipulated earlier in life, you eventually gained lucidity and developed a healthy sense of skepticism that you now automatically apply to your observations and experiences. You are endlessly curious about human behavior and the nature of the universe, and you have one or more lifestyle habits that most people would consider odd or unusual. You are not only of very high intelligence, you are also extremely creative in one or more areas (music, art, software development, inventing, etc.)
If you were in The Matrix, you would have taken the red pill, completed the combat training, and started fighting (and beating) agents from day one.

Your architects: You have cast off reality distortions taught to you by your parents, schooling, corporate advertising and government propaganda. You create your own beliefs based on what serves you best, without much regard for what the rest of the crowd is doing. You are guided by your own internal code of ethics (which may or may not agree with politically-correct ethical codes) rather than any pre-set system of ethics (such as from any one religion).

64. Tests whether you slavishly follow approved "free thinker" dogma.
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 09:06 AM by patcox2
Its Bullshit. It doesn't test whether you are a free-thinker, it just tests which brand of orthodoxy you are a slave to.

67. 73%
lower than I'd have expected, but there were a couple of questions I thought were paranoid - I mean, a couple slices of white bread once in a while isn't going to poison anyone. Also I had to guess on a couple.

68. Preposterously Stupid Test
Too many questions can be argued either way, and interpretations of certain facts are considered proof of their answers.

This thing is useless.

78. That's why it's posted in the LOUNGE
If the poster felt it to be ACCURATE, surely he/she would have posted in NEWS.

I agree with your assessment of the test's accuracy and interpretation of fact, but seriously, did you really think we all thought it was meant to taken as 100% accurate.

Isn't that the whole point of skepticism?

79. So, I Can't Comment On It?
Because other people didn't expect it to be perfect, i can't comment about how silly i thought it was?

And, it might help to make other people be a little more skeptical, since there are factual errors in their answers.

Geez. I didn't know i needed prior approval to have an opinion.

86. Of course you can have an opinion Prof
and I agree with it...
But don't get your dander up. I don't think you were being criticized, really.

Text mediums are tough to interpret - they lack tone of voice and body language. Misunderstanding comes more easily than understanding. (And Khash is lecturing again and should shut the fuck up.)

Khash.

I just won't FIT into one your neat little BOXES, man. So take your nine-to-five, corporate wage slave TEST, and shove it where the sun don't SHINE, man.

How's that?

Free Thinker
Welcome to the top 5%. You're a true free thinker and a person who is well informed about the reality in which you live. Although you may have been easily manipulated earlier in life, you eventually gained lucidity and developed a healthy sense of skepticism that you now automatically apply to your observations and experiences. You are endlessly curious about human behavior and the nature of the universe, and you have one or more lifestyle habits that most people would consider odd or unusual. You are not only of very high intelligence, you are also extremely creative in one or more areas (music, art, software development, inventing, etc.)

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 01:33 PM by Threedifferentones
neatly into a "true" or "false" category. Also, answering false to every question gives you a score of 85 and puts you in the top 5% of "free thinkers." A fun little diversion but ultimately as lacking in substance as all of the things the creators of the test want us to be "free" from.
