Anyone ever slam their finger and lose a nail?

I did the first thing, and I think I may be about to do the second thing.

Anything to watch out for?

1. It happened to me the first part

of the year. I was working the cash register and shut it with my middle right finger still in it(OUCH!)..it turned all sorts of interesting colors before it turned black and then it was so dead and needed to be scraped off.

It's all better now and I can't even tell that it happened..just takes time. But, maybe you won't lose your's. I guess it depends on how badly you slammed it.

2. Not much you can do about it

beyond letting it take its course. How did you manage it ?
just avoid banging it into things and wait about a month or two.

In my case, I lost my thumbnail after my hand was caught in the breach of an M-1 during an " inspection arms"
drill. The bolt cammed off the back of my right hand and smacked the fireing pin into my thumbnail at about 600 mph.

Just say it was very, very, painful. It was the only ! click ! heard in the formation.

My circumstance is much more mundane: A door and momentum and my left hand.

3. I have

I got it caught between two 1,000 lb. rolls of paper. I barely even felt it because it hurt to bad. I just stood there looking at the bloody end of my finger and the nail which was now plastered to the side of the roll.

4. It's not too bad.

It's happened to me a couple of times. First my nail turned black and then, over time, the major part of it basically came loose from my finger. By that time it didn't hurt or anything. It's not even sensitive after you lose the nail (as I remember) because the nail bed is pretty thick.

9. I had my big toenails removed surgically...which was no picnic, either

You can live without them, as it turns out. but the do provide protection against hammers and stubbing. Not having my big toenails means if someone steps on them, it REALLY hurts.

but on the good side, the only way to keep them from regrowing is to remove the root, very very deep in your finger, which is highly unlikely you did. If you lose it, another will grow from the root.

heck, even my toenails were supposed to never grow again, because of destroying the roots, but I have wild portions that come in from the sides I have to trim. Weird.

(if you're curious, I"m diabetic and had constant infected ingrown toenails, they removed them to prevent an infection from causing worse problems.)

10. Yep

I had a horse shift all its weight onto my foot after I cleaned its hoof. Lost my big toenail.

As I recall (this was almost 25 years ago), I just kept putting my toe in Dettol or a similar antiseptic. It took quite a while for it to grow back.

12. You may not have to lose the nail!

You can relieve the pressure on the nailbed by burning a hole in it (very, very, carefully mind you) with a soldering iron or a red hot wire. Google it.

I of course learned this way after I slammed my right thumb with a framing hammer. OUCH. And it does too hurt when it grows back. Drove me nuts.

13. Twice

Both times a combination of inattentive younger sibling and the heavy door of an old muscle car was to blame. Both times my swollen thumb turned purple and green and there was a shitload of pus but it didn't hurt at all when the nail came off.

I don't recall that the nail hurt growing back in, but this was proably eighteen years ago at least, so that doesn't mean much.

A blood blister under a nail that doesn't come off hurts worse, IMO.
