there was no Looting whatsoever.
remember when the pistons won the NBA titLe? no Looting then, either.
remember 9-11 when iraq attacked us using pLanes? there was no Looting then, either.
so where did this phenomenon of "Looting" come from, and why have humans waited untiL a naturaL disaster Like this to start doing it.

it usually happens when you can't get the essentials to live. the older NYC blackout had looting of "luxury" items cause peoples livelihood wasn't threatened

there has never been any looting in New York after any type of disaster. New Yorkers just don't do that kind of thing.

5. I suspect there are several factors... |
|
Fear of not getting relief (especially for those with children), lack of sleep, and despair probably help make the human brain shut down to "primal" mode. It wouldn't surprise me if those who were looting were, in fact, decent law-abiding citizens before Katrina came through.

11. Looting happens aLL the time |
|
for god knows what reasons.
in amherst, mass. the first snow faLL every year/semester brings mass rioting/Looting. why? i dunno. peopLe are idiots.
whever power goes out somewhere, Looting happens.
whenever a city's sports team happens to win a titLe, Looting happens.
point of this thread is: Looting happens. it's been happening for how Long now? why is it now a topic? that's an aspect i find mind-bending.
some of the positions taken here on DU, i'd probabLy support if you're taLking about terrapins' ceLebration, but not during a natruaL disaster. peopLe do shit in hopeLess/panicky situations - i'd gather most in survivaL mode.

9. Oh, I don't know - in Harlem there was looting in the big blackout |
|
two years ago (the August 2003 one). There was also looting in the smaller blackout that hit my neighborhood a couple years before that. And in the blackouts before that.
Though in 2003 there was less looting than usual, mostly, I'm sure, because the police had a good 5-6 hours to mobilize before darkness came, and they FILLED Harlem with cops.
On my walk home from midtown, I saw hardly a single cop until I passed 125th street and entered toward my place. Starting at 125th, there were cops everywhere. And in my immediate blocks, there were cops stationed at every intersection.
The next morning, Harlem was under a FUCKING BLANKET of trash - broken bottles, broken other shit, papers, just trash shit fucking everywhere. It was fucking disgusting. But not surprising.
But the looting we held down to a pretty small minimum. And I'm sure it's because the cops had so much time to prepare and put themselves in place long before darkness.
