3. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place.
He fits right in there. And that's the Dude. The Dude, from Los Angeles. And even if he's a lazy man - and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in all of Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. Sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man. Well, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced it enough.

12. Okay, well this is common knowledge, but it isn't.
You know DeNiro's "You talkin' to me? I don't see anybody else here" thing to the mirror?

That's straight out of a saloon scene in Shane, one among many films that Scorsese often references in interviews, documentaries, and, yes, films.

Rent Shane and surprise yourself with the dialogue in that scene.

Crazy bastards: Paul Schrader, Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorsese.

But while we're on the subject, why the fuck would Travis take Betsy, whose beauty and purity he had so obsessively fetishized, to a porn movie on their first date? I found this completely inconsistent with his moralistic and moralizing character, and totally implausible to the plot. It's my one big problem with a movie that I completely love.

14. I understand the current of isolation that ran through the core of Travis,
but I can't abide that his conscience was so bifurcated as to allow him to loathe the "scum" and "wiping the cum off the backseat" on the one hand and taking the sainted ("They cannot touch her") Betsy to a fuck-flick on the first date on the other. Travis wasn't a sociopath, after all.

The excuse "Lots of couples go to these movies" on his part, if sincere from the character, is abjectly dissonant with his condemnation of the sexual low-life he so abhors in the film's opening character-defining monologue. Travis would know better. He was knowing enough to peg Tom (Albert Brooks) as a semi-sleazy, if furtive, suitor of Betsy.

The porn flick first date scene rings false to me. I wish the scene had been edited out. Something went haywire here among Schrader/Scorcese/DeNiro here.

Or maybe it was uncredited supervising editor Steven Spielberg who put things so awry. Scorsese hadn't yet found the editor of his career, Thelma Schoonmaker, Mrs. Michael Powell.

Obviously this is a matter of taste and open to endless discussion, though perhaps not satisfactory resolution. Only satisfactory discussion.

Or maybe the obviousness of that obviously is only obvious to me. But I don't see Travis taking his divine Betsy to a porn flick on the first date.

23. to understand,
you need to be isolated for a loooonnnggg time ( mentally, i've been close to travis bickle territory)...have some crap job with long hours and live in an area which helps you form contempt for everything around you, you sit alone in an apartment and have no friends, going weeks and weeks without saying more than a sentence to anyone (online chats do not count), and the only things to keep you company are a TV (no cable), a PS2, and a computer.

after ahile, you have a VERY skewered perspective on what is or is not within social norms...you have no idea how to relate or have any meaningful conversation with someone in real life...and it goes downhill from there.

19. Oh, I had the wrong scene, here's the rest...

... who would not take it any more,
a man who stood up against the
scum, the cunts, the dogs, the
filth. Here is ...

I think here is where it fades to a scene of Travis shooting his guns at the mirror.

18. Starts with 'All the animals come out at night. Whores, skunk pussies,
buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies. Sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.'

I still scratch my head about the 'skunk pussies' part.
