"He's crushing his testicles in tight trousers for world peace."

ROTTEN ATTITUDE
SEX Pistols singer John Lydon isn't impressed with Bono's political activism. The aging anarchist snarled to gigwise.com: "Every time I see Bono in those big fly glasses and tight leather pants I just can't hack it. I can't see that as solving the world's problems. He's crushing his testicles in tight trousers for world peace." Clearly on a roll, Lydon took a shot at another saintly rock royal — Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof. "It was a very shoddy and weak production," Lydon said of Live 8. "And there weren't enough black faces in the show for my liking. I don't don't think it achieved anything. Bob Geldof is too self-serving."

3. Johnny Rotten never stood for a damned thing in is life except
annihilation of the system. He has offered no insight as to how to make things better. He needs to sit down and STFU - IMHO, of course.

6. Obviously Lyndon didn't check out the other Live8 concerts
Philadelphia seemed to be more hip-hop/rap in their lineup. Plus what the hell is Snoop Dogg? He was at the London performance!

10. go read Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus
or read on the Situationists.

there IS no "making things better". there are only opportunities to pull aside the curtain & expose the machinery.

11. I have never been fond of people who are quick to point out what
is wrong with a situation without offering potential solutions to the problems. So, I'll read your book if you read, "Fury of the Hour." :7

15. in the abstract i agree with you
i am always saying "too much analysis, not enough synthesis". but ultimately, i think society needs iconoclasts like Lydon.

if your book has to do with the Clash, i'm there.

Its not just criticism without constructive alternatives. In order to begin to look for improvement, people have to lose their blinders, they need to see the reality of what is around them.

Too much in our society is a complete fraud, but the fraud is helpful to the powers that be because the lies and the frauds and the symbolic but ultimately meaningless crap like Live 8 create the illusions people need to put up with the world.

Lydon's style is not criticism, it is illusion-shattering, a necessary step in any paradigmatic change.

Look at Live 8, what utter crap, it allowed the richest people in the world to spend one day giving a shit (between songs, anyway) allowed them to salve their conscience by buying a concert ticket, all the while partying on, man, sacrificing nothing whatsoever, burning more gas in the car on the way home than could be purchased with annual income of the average african, yet now empowered with the complete and utter bullshit illusion that they have done something. Bullshit.

to say it, you've got to live it, too. Check out this link:

22. Um, nobody bought a concert ticket for Live 8
it wasn't about buying tickets it was about global awareness. It wasn't a bunch of rich folks taking one day off it was about a country united together. I was at Philly's Live8 and I take offense at that statement. Philly brought in over 600k people to the Ben Franklin Parkway for a free concert that was filled with such diverse performances as Jay-Z, Kayne West, Will Smith, Linken Park, Dave Matthews and even (Gasp) Toby Keith. The only cost for the show was a ticket on Septa to get you over to either Suburuban Square or 30th Street Station.

The performance were enjoyable (Ok, I would have preferred the London concert but I'm in the Philly metro area) and the message was powerful

7. What the hell has Lydon ever done for the world except complain?
He's the freaking Ross Perot of rock music. Lots of whining, but no answers.

At least Bono is fucking TRYING.

its been a LONG TIME since "this is not a love song", John. If you're going to be a Negationist & Fatalist, don't gossip. It demeans your stance.
