It must be a midwestern thing. That's how I've always pronounced it.
You have time to edit the subject header. :-)

I know I shouldn't, but I don't know anybody from there and I just don't think about it enough to make N'awline a habit. sorry

that there are so many ways to pronounce one word. I have a tendency to want it pronounced "Bil-ox-ee." Of course, that might just be my middle Atlantic roots.

I meant the first syllable to be pronounced like in 'bill', not 'bye' - pronunciation is hard work!

Unfortunately.
:-(
Just now catching up with images from the flooding...hard to believe. Makes me wonder about places like the amazing Aquarium of the Americas and all the rest of it...and wondering how many times the Vieux Carre has been flooded before and how it'll be after this one's subsided. And just how many people are dead. And whether cholera and other diseases will run rampant...and how polluted the entire area is right now...
I'm all for Nature reminding us who wears the pants but this is just too much...and the really sad thing s that, soon enough, we'll forget the lessons and once again act in the belief that we've mastered Nature (especially when there's a semolian to be made in service of that belief). The Army Corps keeps trying, but Big Mama Nature prevails every time.

I'm confused reading all of the other phonetic spellings now. The first word is definitely New rather than Nu, the second word has three syllables.
