Given NOLA, I'm preparing my own emergency plans.
Can anyone recommend a survival book with information on living in the wild? I'm looking for something that's weatherproof and small enough to carry in a pocket. Any hikers out there?

1. there's nothing really that will help you
that is that portable. if you're out there in the wild, no book is really going to help you, I'm afraid.

That said, look for jim Brown: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0425105725/qid=1125670788/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3095952-8638341?v=glance&s=books

it might keep you a alive for a few days.

more important though, keep a week's worth of water, food and medicines in your house, I actually have a case of water, a camp stove with fuel (I camp, so it gets used and replaced. I can survive in my apartment, with no power and two guests, for, I figure, ten days. you are much more likely to be at home when disaster strikes. hell, I have two emergency kits, one to grab and run, and one to stay at home with. The latter even includes books, just in case it's a long time. Oh, and I keep a couple of hundred dollars in cash, just in case.

3. I'm a backpacker
There's one pocket reference I always take on backpacking trips, and while its information is pretty specialized, it's important information to have. The Backcountry Medical Guide is a must have if you're going to be out and away from civilization.

That said, I don't think civilization is going to come crashing down anytime soon. Don't play yourself like those Y2K survivalists did :)
