I have three trees down on my house, no power, no phone...
and am using my computer right now, on a battery that's half-charged. I don't have time to look at PMs right now, though I see some in my inbox.

I just want to quickly tell you that my family and my pets are ok. I am staying at my parents' house throughout this ordeal. Their phone line is workin--intermittently.

We have no gasoline for the generator. If you want gas, you have to go west at least 100 miles. I've made the trip twice, and I swear I felt unsafe, as if someone might run me off the road to steal the gas cans in the back of my truck. The gas stations have to have three or four police at each one to keep fist-fights from breaking out. I've never seen tempers so high. And I'm 90 miles north of the devastation in New Orleans. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing the same anarchy here. Soon.

FEMA has yet to bring us water or ice. Even though we are in the worst devastated area north of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, it seems that FEMA and MS EMA doesn't even know we are here.

Elderly people are hungry. Babies can't get milk or formula. There is NOTHING unless you have the money or gas to travel west into Louisiana. And even there, where there is power, it is anarchic.

The stupid president keeps telling us that help is on the way. It's been four fucking days. Tell that to the children of elderly parents who can't take the heat without at least some water. Tell that to the young parents, whose baby has nothing to drink.

We have to sit on the front porch of the house at night, with flashlights and a shot gun. Looting has already begun here. Quick stops, grocery stores, even jewelry stores. People are looting clothing stores. A jewelry store in my hometown was looted for fucking SILVERWARE.

But the worst is that people are roving darkened neighborhoods, siphoning gas from vehicles. If you have a full tank today, you won't have a full tank tomorrow, when the criminals discover that you have gas. Therefore, you have to sit on your porch or in your garage with a flashlight and a gun. If you want to know what it's going to be like to live in post apocalyptic United States, drive on down south.

Ok, that's how we're doing. I am worried about merh, trof, SwampRat, and other DUers. If you guys can just fill me in quickly on what you have heard, I would really appreciate it.

I'll reply for as long as my laptop's battery and the phone lines hold out.

1. MADDY!
 So glad you checked in. We were all wondering about you.

Sounds like things are only slightly better where you are. Are they delievering mail? Is their some place we could get supplies if you or your parents and neighbors need it?

9. I don't even know if mail is being delivered...
The post office is locked up and dark. Or it was yesterday morning.

Seriously, we have food and I have a propane stove. It's all the other people around here who are in such pitiful shape.

Two days ago, I would have asked for you to mail me mantles for my propane lantern. But I was digging through supplies and found two packages.

We have Spam, Pringles, several more gallons of water, bread, and other things we need. Since we ran the generator until the gas ran out, most of our food in the freezer is still edible. I'm going to make another run to Vidalia or Ferriday, Louisiana, either tomorrow or Sunday. We still have gas in our Dodge Ram, and that's what I'll need to take to bring home gas for the generator. It's so unsafe right now, though, that I will have to take my dad or brother with me when I go. I'm not going alone again. And my son will stay put.

You just can't imagine what this is like here. I have no concept of time. It's like this area is isolated in a bubble. It's eerie.

I love you too, Teena...I'm not getting messages on my cell phone right now. Some people are saying that text messages are getting through, but voice isn't. Can't explain that. That's why I am so nervous leaving here, going west for gas.

It's like the 1800s along the Natchez Trace. Scary as shit.

I will try to get my battery recharged if we get gas tomorrow. Please let me know if you all here from BH or FL.

63. Already one car fire on the interstate. Girl driving north on I-55...
day of the hurricane, smoking, with 50 gallons of gas in 5 gallon buckets in the back of the truck. Threw her cig out the window, and pow! My brother's on the FD, so they had to go put the fire out.

Yeah, I leave the cigs here when I make that run. (I'm almost out of tobacco anyway, so it might be a mandatory time to quit smoking.)

Thanks for caring, sweetie.

52. I appreciate you all worrying...
I am fine...my son is fine. My parents and brother are fine. We are sharing our supplies with elderly folks and friend here who have nothing.

Also, my schnauzer is fine...she's being a great watch dog. She ran off three boys who came into my parents' carport and tried to steal MMjr's dirtbike.

It's crazy here...but our family will be fine. I'm more worried about the poor and elderly here, for whom NO ONE is caring. Where is FEMA?

Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 01:59 PM by crispini
that there is FEMA there. I was considering making the trip but they think they are fine for the time being and were a bit discouraging. I think they are worried about the gas situation.

If you see a great need where you are I am sure I can probably get to you. That is if you are where I think you are. I don't want to make things worse for anyone though.

53. My brother is on the fire department here. He swears that FEMA...
will be here today with ice and water.

I bought about 30 gallons of water before this all began. We have enough water that we are sharing with the elderly family and friends who don't have supplies.

I appreciate it, crisp...I'm going to make another trip to Ferriday tomorrow or Sunday for gas, so that we can keep the generator hopping and the food edible.

We have charcoal, propane, lamp oil, batteries, etc. We are fine in our household. But there are thousands here who are depending on FEMA to show up. Those are the ones who have it worst.

First, I'm really glad you're ok. But secondly, is this really the United States of America? The wealthiest nation on earth? What is wrong with this picture?

I'm starting to think that Britain should have sent some aid, like we would have done if it was a developing nation that was struck.

69. Just got the 15% warning on my battery. Got to go.
I wish I could have responded to every post, but my battery is going now.

I have to drive to my house, about four miles from my parents, to see if it's still secure.

Will stop by the fire house to see if FEMA is coming today.

Pray for the coast, pray for new orleans, and pray for all the people inland affected by this horrific situation.

I love you all, and I appeciate your concern. Just keep praying and sending good thoughts for all the people in this area--New Orleans, Gulf Coast, and inland--that somehow people will get what they need.

I can't stress enough how much my DU family means to me. :loveya:

I've been very, very worried! Lit a candle for you when you asked for prayers on Sunday night, and that flame has not gone out since. (Although I've had to transfer it four times to different candles because of burning down.)

I'll keep it burning it until I hear from the last DUer still missing, Frustrated Lefty, and until you don't have to sit on your porch with a shot gun all night. You still have my prayers.

Much peace, Maddy.

91. Maddy - take care and be safe.
My in-laws are in Lacombe, LA (just west off Slidell in St. Tammany Parish) and were not flooded but have trees down and no electricity etc. They got a "we're OK" message to us via someone with a ham radio who radioed someone who called my neice in KY. That was Monday. On Tuesday, our nephew manged to drive to Baton Rouge and call his sister in KY to let her know they were not flooded and about the damage to the homes. That was the last we heard. There is virtually no news from St. Tammany Parish and it's cut off from the Gulf Coast and NOLA because I-10 is out. They've cordoned off the 24 mile causeway.

Now I have a better idea of what's happening to them. :scared:

Be safe. We are so very worried. Mr. CB is NOLA native and is heartsick as am I. God have mercy on us all.

I'm praying for you and your family

Cotton Bear

99. 1-866-217-6255 AAR Public Voicemail
Air America Public Voicemail
1-866-217-6255

Air America Radio's Public Voicemail is a way for disconnected people to communicate in the wake of Katrina.

Here's how it works:

Call the toll-free number above, enter your everyday phone number, and then record a message. Other people who know your everyday phone number (even if it doesn't work anymore) can call Emergency Voicemail, enter the phone number they associate with you, and hear your message.

You can also search for messages left by people whose phone numbers you know.
Air America Radio will leave Public Voicemail in service for as long as this crisis continues. You can call it whenever you are trying to locate someone, or if you are trying to be found.

I am more than willing to drive over Sunday or Monday and bring all the supplies I can get together for you guys. Whatever you need - even if just a visit from a friend. If it would be more trouble than help, let me know that, too, but know that I am ready to help however I can. Please, please, let me know what I can do!!!!

Incredibly relieved to hear from you,

Please hang tight, many of us are doing ab-so-fucking-lutely everthing that we possibly can. I think of you and all the people throughout the South. I'm calling, emailing, gathering supplies.

I work in a biz where we have many t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Today I asked my intern to head to the schwag "vault" and gather everything with "old" logos (ie, companies co-branded with our stuff who are no longer clients). T-shirts, long-sleeve t-shirts, sweaters, jackets, hats, backpacks and overnight bags. I had to work late, but my car is loaded to the max and I'm looking forward to a local delivery by folks that were evac'd to my town.

127. Hi, Maddy...
Don't know if you'll see this -- hope you're saving what's left of your battery power -- but I can only add my voice to those of everyone else here, and say how much a relief it is to hear from you. It sounds awful there, especially in potential (area-wide, I mean), but I trust that you will all come through vastly better than okay.

I know what it's like to languish for days or weeks in the wake of a major hurricane without power and all that (really weird, those long days without power -- "I'll go work on the computer a while...oh, wait a minute, no I won't...maybe I'll go watch a DVD, then...oh, wait a minute, no I won't") but I can only barely imagine, thanks to having watched a few postapocalyptic movies, what it's like in your part of the world right now. The power cut, food and water, and all the rest of the logistical problems are one thing, but that human factor -- the sociopathic human factor, that would be -- is a whole other thing. It's a chilling foreshadowing of how things could be more widely in the US with just a few more conditions lining up right and, of course, of how it has been and is in many other parts of the world. Scary. Maybe we should all take advantage of the Second Amendment while the Constitution still has a pulse...learn from what's happening over there and prepare for the worst while working for the best.

Anyway, I'm happy that you're all doing all right. Lots of people are holding you in their thoughts and hearts and just wishing for your ordeal to be over as soon as nature and human industriousness allows...I'm sure glad you don't have to rely on the good graces of the Feds, given that they seem to be about as missing in action as Doofusboy was in the early '70s. 129. My thoughts are with you Maddy
I can't adequately imagine the horror you and other victims of Katrina are facing right now. My heart aches every time I read a story or see pictures of what is happening down there. I become furious when some idiot tries to lay the blame on the victims.

I hope you, your family and your pets remain safe. Keep us updated as you can.

With much metta

131. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
All of you that are experiencing this are. Stay safe. Hold your son close to you. You're an incredibly strong woman and you'll be ok. Let's hope our government does what it needs to do for those in need who aren't so strong (children, sick, elderly especially). It's a damn travesty that they haven't been.

134. You let me know if you need anything.
Send me a pm or something. Maybe something can be done. Girl Scouts around here are doing projects as is my church (UMC). UPS, FedEX, something-anything that can get through.
