You know, given the alternative, I think I will now wear the moniker |
|
moonbat with pride.
I am proud of the fact that this is the worst the right can call me.
In my neighborhood, we have a Friday Cheers thing every Friday. I was wearing one of my DU shirts, as per normal, and people, all RWers, mind you, were all talking about what a disgusting failure he is and how ashamed of them they all are.
It was a very good night for me.

Moonbat is a political epithet coined in 2002 by Perry de Havilland of "The Libertarian Samizdata," a libertarian weblog. It was originally a play on the last name of George Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian, but now the term enjoys great currency in the libertarian blogosphere as an all-purpose insult for modern liberals, peace protestors, and other ideological opponents. It is similar to the epithets Feminazi or Idiotarian.
According to de Haviland, a moonbat is "someone on the extreme edge of whatever their -ism happens to be." Adriana Cronin defines the term as "someone who sacrifices sanity for the sake of consistency." This term has long been used to describe protesters on the political Left, and is sometimes used to describe protesters on the political Right.
...O_o doesn't seem like a very good insult. "You're...a MOONBAT."
"Zealot" rolls off the tongue more nicely, but I suppose that's got religious undertones.

Interestingly enough, "Contrast: see wingnut" was listed at the bottom of Wiki's page. XD

12. when anyone calls me a liberal...and means it in a bad way... |
|
I'm always reminded of this quote...
If by a “liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “liberal.” – President John F. Kennedy
which judging by the source of the quote, I'm sure it gets their goat even more

23. Oh, now that I know the origin, |
|
The next time I'm called a moonbat I'll tack one of two tacks:
1) "That's Monbiot, idiot. Get it right!"
2)"I'm no moonbat. Most of the moonbats I know are on the right."
I've thought it was silly because to most of us it means nothing at all, unlike 'wingnut' which clearly is related to the terms right wing and left wing, and with a little context it's pretty clear which wing is implied.

you should search the DU archives for the term "Moonbat" and see which two posters who are no longer with us used that term on a reagular basis.
