The Flu
I have it. It sucks. 103 fever. My son has it, too. We went to the ER together. Diagnosed with strain A.

Is the flu in your area? It is rampant here--one public school here had 200 students out yesterday.

2. Mississippi. And I had the flu shot.
I had my flu shot on October 31. Got the flu on November 9. It takes two weeks for the shot to develop immunity. I was a week to late.

3. Oh God, I'm reading "The Stand" for the 3rd time. Don't mention it to me.
Just kidding. In all seriousness, it was supposed to be a nasty flu season this winter anyway, but I wasn't worried about it, cause I never get the flu. I just get colds. I am worried about meningitis though, because of the high risk in the winter in college dorm rooms. I'm getting a meningitis vaccine later this month.

7. Better go ahead and get the flu shot...
NOW. Trust me, you don't want this. I never get the flu either, and even had the shot, but not early enough to develop immunity.

High fever, body aches from hell, deep chest cough...this one sucks bad. I teach at college and had to cancel my classes this week. We were already a little behind; now we are WAY behind.

9. Well, I don't know. I haven't had the flu in 10 years.
I think the last time was in November of 1993. Actually, since it's the 10-year mark, it may be an omen, or something. I might as well get both vaccinations.

But the flu vaccine gives you a cold, though. I really don't want to get a cold on purpose. But then again...

12. No, the flu vaccine doesn't give you a cold...
I had zero side effects...not even the sniffles, nor was I achy at the site of injection.

Rhinovirus causes the flu. Flu vaccines are made from the dead virus so it can't cause you to get sick.

14. GET THE MENINGITIS VACCINE!! ALL OF YOU COLLEGE FOLK!!
I know it cost around $90, but my father had it a few years ago. He very nearly died. He had a bronchial infection and the doc. gave him a anti-biotic he was alergic too. It didn't help, it just made the infection move to his cerebo-spinal fluid. We don't go that doc. anymore! My father thought it was a migrane, didn't want to go to the hospital, thought the Imitrex would kick in. We got him to go eventualy. He gave the nurse a bunch of wrong info. He had to get a spinal tap, my mother refuses talk about that, it was bad.

Get the vaccine, it wont work for what happened to my father, but for most people, it can save their lives.

Thank you.

19. Dunno
I just know that college students usualy think its the flu or a headache or a hang over, and don't get the attention they need. And kids tend to share bottles and that spreads it.
Baby die from it because some parents think its just a cold or flu.
Menigitis kills FAST. Thats thats the bad part.

When I was in college 25 years ago, a classmate left her roommate home with the 'flu' and went to classes as normal. When she got back that afternoon, her roommate was DEAD. it was meningitis.

Get that shot!

5. Should I get the shot?
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 10:01 PM by Lizz612
Its $20, alot for a college student. I live in a dorm. If it comes here, I don't know the chances of that, it would tear through the dorms I'm sure. What do you think jchild? Most people say no, but... I'm in a dorm, there is no chance I would escape IF it got here...

I don't mean to thread-jack.

Ps. I hope you feel better! And your son too! How old is he?

8. Get it NOW before the flu hits your area.
All you have to do is BREATHE around someone with the flu and you get it.

If I would have gotten my shot a week earlier, I wouldn't have gotten the flu. I put it off, and put it off, and now I regret it.

13. You all got the flu
after you got the shot.

And yet all of you deny the connection.

Strange.

15. ???
What are you saying? Who is "you all?"

And what "connection?"

My son wasn't vaccinated and he got the flu first. He was one of the first 10 cases here. I got the flu from HIM not from the shot.

17. Not a good sign
The influenza season usually starts later in the season.

A number of meteorologists are also predicting a cold winter, given the unexplained speed-up of the arctic vortex in the last year. That remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be a very pleasant winter if it happens.

The last time I had the flu was in 1990. My temp went to over 104 and I was completely delerious. I didn't even have the presence of mind to get to an ER. Scared the hell out of me.

18. I was in that shape yesterday...
I'm taking Tamiflu which is supposed to shorten the duration of the flu, and lessen the symptoms.

I feel much better than I did yesterday. Going to try to get a little work done this evening.
