Some people are opposed to sending donations through the big companies, especially since we know that a lot of it is funnelled through Pat Robertson and his "charity."
I just wanted to mention that I've been thinking of the animals a lot with this disaster, and have given as much as I could to HSUS, Peta and the NO/LA Humane Society. The animals are really not thought of enough in a crisis like this, but someone really does need to speak for them. Some might protest my choices, but I feel very strongly that the little guys are the ones who are never going to survive at all without our help.
One woman I know who lived in Slidell lost her home and many of the ferals she took care of as a result of Katrina. She tried to catch them all, but it was impossible. She did manage to get some of them out, including her dogs, but as a result, there is little for her to return to without thinking of them along the way. They deserve our help as much as the people do.
Many people here at DU are very much animal lovers, and I just thought to mention this because it would be great to hear some good news coming out of NO right now.

Yeah, I think many are wary of donating to groups that may funnel money through questionable organizations, or "charities" that have regressive social positions. Here's two that I like. United Animal Nations Emergency Animal Rescue Service: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=231x6452Vets for Peace (odd choice for disaster relief? no, they've set up food & assistance centers in LA): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4643310
