1. Tom Petty mix.
Track now: "The Last DJ," one of my favorite songs of the past 10 years. QuickTime video here: http://www.elvinsystems.com/pictures/y2002/lastdj.htm

The Last DJ

well, you can't turn him
into a company man
you can't turn him into a whore
and the boys upstairs
just don't understand anymore

the top brass don't like him
talking so much
and he won't play
what they say to play
and he don't want to change
what don't need to change

there goes the last dj
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
there goes your freedom of choice
there goes the last human voice
there goes the last dj

some folks say they're gonna
hang him so high
'cause you just can't do what he did
there's some things you just can't
put in the minds of those kids

as we celebrate mediocrity
all the boys upstairs want to see
how much you'll pay for
what you used to get for free

there goes the last dj
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
there goes your freedom of choice
there goes the last human voice
there goes the last dj

well, he got him a station
down in mexico
sometimes it'll kinda come in
and i'll bust a move and
remember how it was back then

there goes the last dj
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
there goes your freedom of choice
there goes the last human voice
there goes the last dj

10. Firewater - Another Perfect Catastrophe.
Fitting.

Firewater - Another Perfect Catastrophe:

Ain't nothing like it
When it's twisting and reeling
They'll put the boot right in your eye
Because when the floor turns into wall
And then the wall turns into ceiling
Oh what a lovely way to die
Another perfect catastrophe
Is just waiting to happen
Waiting for the moment to transpire
Another perfect catastrophe
Is just dying to go down
It's only looking for the
Perfect place and time

Oh wouldn't you love
To be my partner in crime
So many tricks that we could try
So if you want to find out
What it would been like to my
Co-conspiritor
Open up the door and step inside

When retreat is not an option
And remorse just ain't your style
There must be something left to do
Because every tragedy is a comedy
Unless you're the victim
Then you're just another monkey in the zoo

Gorgeous - the organ's an Aeolian Skinner, can't remember where (I want to say Columbus, Ohio, but I'd probably be wrong then); it manages to cope with the French music very well indeed (which would have been composed for something more like a Cavaillé-Coll).

40. Ben Folds
The Luckiest

I don’t get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

What if I’d been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I’d be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you

Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I’m sorry, I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

Sounds like you've got a bad one.

I've got nothing against the first or third tunes...but I don't want to hear them more than once a week, that's for sure. Dream On ... even less often.

I didn't listen past the first five minutes of Jack-FM. A) I was too pissed...and B) the first two tunes played were NOTHING I'd ever listen to. "Fight for Your Right (to Party)" by the Beastie Boys was the first...and I couldn't even Tell you what was second.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 03:35 PM by mcscajun
...is up right now. I've been listening to a whole set of Cajun/Zydeco/N.O. tunes out of my collection.

First time I could play 'em in a week without weeping. Someone on another thread proposed using this music as a new form of protest against our Feckless Fuck of a "Leader", and I was inspired to knock together a "Lament for Louisiana" list.

It's an excellent CD that I haven't taken out for a while. I have so many that many good CDs don't get heard for long periods of time.

As for the Hope Partlow, I'll probably buy it. Overall, it's not the best the pop/rock genre has to offer, but it's pop/rock mixed with down home charm, and that makes the CD largely enjoyable. Great moments include "Crazy Summer Nights" and the sweet "Like You Do."
