controversial question of the night: are minorities only allowed to make.
fun of minorities?

I'm watching BET and so much of it involves stereotypes that I had to wonder if a white person could say the same things.

Now I'm not talking about black/white relations. The black comedians are talking about Hispanics the way I used to hear white comdians talk about blacks.

I'm all for racial equality, but should any group make fun of another group using stereotypes?

1. The white comedians do the same thing on BET

They make fun of blacks, whites and every other ethnic group.
And the Asian and Hispanic comedians make fun of blacks, whites and every other group when they are on BET.

3. I guess I'm underexposed
I thought racial jokes were gone. It was a bit shocking for me to hear black comdians making fun of hispanics.

4. You would have to give me an idea of what he said
I have seen Hispanic, white, black and asian comedians on BET making fun of blacks. Comics make jokes about stereotypes all the time.

2. I've seen Paul Rodriguez do it in a manner that is MORE

of a communication of comradery in a sense. Since black people and latinos often are given the same treatment..I think they do it more to mock the invisible system that makes it possible rather than really taking aim at each other.

Can't say without watching the show though.

I will say this though..there are ways I joke around with my black friends and THEY with me that I would NOT post on DU. There isn't a background of relatedness to do it here that there might be in person.

5. true, but the same could be said for anyone you know well
Most people joke around differently with any group that they know on a more than passing basis.

6. jokes of a racial nature have to be made gracefully
The key is that is you are poking fun at another group it has to be funny without being nasty or hateful.
