7. My kid is the next generation (born in 2000).
No groupthink coming out of her.
She's an individual.

9. Then she has a leg up over the sheep
I predict one of two outcomes

Either her iconoclastic stature will make her an outcast, she has to fight that and win.

Or she will take a position of leadership and lead the sheep out of the pen.

The choice is YOURS

4. Wasn't it the "Boomers" who've given us Reagan and the neofascist-
Bush. They say they're more like their grandparents which means they'll be democrats.

5. There was always some kind of opposition Reaganism
The lesson with today's kids is that all the fascists have to do is satiate the needs of the Neo Boomers with material wealth in order to ensure their exceptance of a fascist takeover

10. True story about my then 15 yo nephew
I picked him up from school one day a couple of years ago. I've often done that when his parents have had to do things in the afternoons.

Normally I listen to rock in the car. The boys liked that because their fundie-influenced mother only let them listen to classical and contemporary country music. :P

Anyway some news report came on. I forget what now b/c his response to it so shocked me at the time. The younger nephew wanted to change it to the oldies station, but I said "No, I want to hear this story."

Here's the conversation:

older nephew: Why do you listen to that stuff anyway?

Me: I want to stay informed. I like being about to think about what's going on. I don't want to be ignorant of others. Don't you want to be informed?

ON: Oh, I don't care. I just tune it out and I figure if it's something important mom and dad will tell me about it.

Me: :wow: :wow: :wow:

This kid is going to have a tough time when he discovers people don't always tell you the truth and indeed will purposefully keep the truth from you.

11. Well, aren't these the children of the parents of the 'Reagan'
I got mine, you get yours generation?

None of this surprises me. When I am out in public, these are the same children that don't even know how to say 'excuse me' when they bump into you or 'thank you' when you help them.

The lack of consideration is a big sign to me. They don't care about people or situations around them, just getting more stuff. Hate to sound simplistic, it's just what I've seen.

I don't know if they are going to be fascist sheep. Seems to me,most of them want to make porn, star in porn, be rock stars, or actors--because they see this is where the money and lifestyles they aspire to are...

Just my $.02...either way, disturbing trends.

12. I posit that they're perfect for it
One one hand, all you have to do is keep them entertained.

Then tell them anything that they want to hear.

On the other hand, do anything you damn well please.

These people have absolutely no concept about questioning authority.

13. I agree with that--absolutely

These people have no concept about questioning authority.

My gf's daughter is a bit older than them. She has noticed this in her cousin--and has many exasperated moments with this young lady. She said she has no common sense, and sense of questioning ANYTHNG.
She's disgusted by them--she see's them as completely stupid.

Editing to add--
I've noticed that for quite a few simple concepts like 'reading comprehension' evade them completely. They have so much exposure to so much information--yet they don't know how to read or think critically.

I've had this very problem with some of this generation on these forums. There's a tendency to take ONE PART of what has been said(written) by myself or others, as opposed to reading the whole. Then they completely misunderstand intent, of an entire message. They are too used to headlines, fast ideas, etc.

THAT really disturbs me, because it totally contributes to what you are saying! No critical thiking, no reading comprehension=no independent thoughts can be formed. I hope this makes sense. I got excited when writing this--so I couldn't really write all I was thinking fast enough... sorry.

Always enjoy reading your thoughts, Mr. Scorpio!

14. That was a pretty over-generalized piece
I think every older generation looks down on the younger with disdain and worry, while the younger looks at the older and thinks "you've really fucked things up horribly, oldsters." And note that everyone raised their hands insofar as being comfortable with gay marriage, so that's a leg up there on the majority of older generations in my view. Plus, we are due for a swing back to the left, and conservative parents don't necessarily produce conservative kids. Why else would everyone want to date Catholic school girls at my high school?

:D

16. I'm not going defend the piece and you're right it was over-generalized
But it was the subtext that grabbed my attention.

And the first thing I thought of was 1984.

The implication that the rising generation is practically docile, highly managed and manipulated.

They are being allowed various societal liberties: Race and sexual orientation are basically accepted; urbanized culture (i.e,. dress and music) determines readily identifiable common uniform and language. Easy access to authorized alcohol, for necessary inebriation and social lubrication. Corporate produced porn, for sexual instruction.

Wars are used as justification for any domestic restriction.

A lot of these things were featured in 1984, and we're seeing them today. The moralistic aspect is different, of course. If you remember, morality was determined by the state. The state was the religion.

Of course, if the government continues to adopt theocratic positions, it then becomes the arbiter of morality and then that aspect of the book is accounted for, in our case.

Most of all, the primary goal of the ruling class is control. As long as control is achieved and maintained, the baser aspects of human nature will be allowed and managed.

The kids today are primed to accept any political institution as long as their values are materially based and completely satisfied.
