California DUers: Do You Have Your Earthquake Preparation In Order? |
|
Nini and I joined Costco this weekend, with one of our stated goals being the preparation of long-term food and water items for storage in case of a major quake. We damn well know we can't trust anyone but ourselves if the shit hits the fan. We did a good job of selecting and purchasing, plus I am putting together a separate first aid kit.
Put some money aside too that is reachable when ATM's could be out-of-service.
If you don't have things in place for a quake, do so as soon as possible. Quakes don't even come with warnings, which really hits home in the wake of Katrina.

In a watertight container: cash (we spent all of ours recently) copies of paperwork (ID, passport, assorted licenses, medical info) first aid kit 1 week of prescriptions (minimum) handcrank flashlight handcrank radio swiss army knife maps can opener compass sleeping bags/blankets/solar blankets water purifier camp stove multivitamins foodstuffs water
(Be sure that the supplies are in a place that won't get buried, preferably outside, and you have to frigging ROTATE the scrips, vitamins, food & water!)
Stupid earthquakes. Stupid subduction zone. Stupid volcanoes. Stupid lahar.
(okay, I'm in Seattle, not LA...but the sentiment is valid for both, and for much of the left coast.)

but I'm not anywhere near a fault line. We're reasonably prepared for a flood or to get stuck in our car should a snowstorm find us in the moutains, though.
BTW, Costco has really great first aid kits for $20. I have one in the house and one in the car.

Remember you're a blue state with a Senator that always gives Bush problems so when the big one hits Bush won't send anyone for a month.

9. Hi there, sasquatch... |
|
That is true, but we have our own very good emergency people all over the state....
And we have our own National Guard here to help out as well...
At least I think we still have some of them!

food and water, emergency medical kit etc. all in a small suit case stashed in a very convenient place in our house.
I went through the Loma Prieta quake and '91 Oakland hills fire. enough disasters for one life. If you have a disaster kit ready be sure to replace the food and water periodically.

missed the fire by a mile.
Where in Oakland/Berkeley were you?
We were by the Lake.
As far as disaster preparedness goes, I am considering moving to Sacramento, and I'm thinking an inflatable raft and a shotgun might be good additions to the kit. As well as water, food, and other bare neccessities.

FEMA predicted the worst possible disasters in the U.S. Not in any order, they were...
1. Terror Attack, NYC.
2. Hurricane, NOLA.
3. Earthquake, San Fransico, CA.
Here's to hoping that BushCo doesn't get THIS trifecta.

and just now seeing that report, I feel like I have suddenly sprouted a bullseye on my back!
After seeing the BushCo. performance this past week, I have decided that I need to update my earthquake kit and plan for a full two weeks of water/food/meds.
