I am about to go nuts
Having a small bar-b-que here with neighbors. There is not one person here that has a clue what is going on in New Orleans. One person said "Didn't that happen last week"

Family has just said to me "Can't you let politics go for one night"

You might read about me tomorrow in my local paper.

I came here to vent.

1. Wow, that sucks.
Sorry your family is so willfully detached.

Just remember: in through the nose, out through the mouth...:pals:

2. No Shit
I'm feeling like I am in another world. These people are watching a ballgame. And cheering for their side. This in unreal.

4. I wouldn't get too down on them for watching a ballgame
Avoidance of the horrifying is a pretty natural reaction. Plus I've managed to follow my beloved Red Sox and still continue to rage against bushCo. Everyone needs an outrage break every once in a while.

3. I just spent two days with the family, politically it breaks down like...
this: My mom and I have a virulent, frothing at the mouth hatred of bush. My father is against the war, generally dislikes bush (former loyal pub, BTW) but doesn't follow things political all that much. My sister and brother in law are conservo-fundies.

So, in the interest of family harmony we avoided political talk (and by extension discussion of Katrina's aftermath). My mom and I had a little rant fest while the others were out of the room, just to let off steam. It was pretty tough not talking about the biggest story in years, but there is no way to discuss it without also discussing the politics of it. It was an interesting couple of days.

6. "Didn't that happen last week?"
Oh, that's old news. Let's move on to what's REALLY important. Say, isn't that girl still missing in Aruba? But that happened a few months ago, you say? It's so much more IMPORTANT than tens of thousands of people dying and losing their homes!

7. That's My weekend, too
Jeanette - I think I was with the same crowd all weekend. My mother always will want to talk only about the weather. I think it is a "safe" topic in her eyes.

A bit of hope tells me these people are just listening,,,taking it all in, and will vote the right way.

But I just sat down after a weekend with that crowd and I am very happy to be and not under a rock.

Thank You!

10. Vent away
I'm still so appalled I can't form sentences sometimes. And when politics involved the deaths of thousands of Americans I reserve my goddam right to vent whenever I want. I've been off work for a few days, but I'm a nurse so I can't imagine that level of apathy in my work place. I did have coffee with some folks who are basically apolitical. They kind of blinked their eyes like they'd been hit with a bright light after being in the dark. All of them are horrified or outraged, thank God, or you'd possibly been reading about ME. I feel ya!
