How many people here have significant others who are conservative?
Or would you consider dating someone who didn't share your political views if everything else were right? (Is it even possible for a conservative to be kind and caring?)

4. Never been able to sustain a relationship with a conservative
sooner or later, it comes down to a fundamental difference in our approach to life.

7. I'm married to an anti-war conservative
who votes Democratic.

My extremely social liberal social views and my love of politics is often a bone of contention. :(

8. MrG has some conservative opinions..i.e. gun ownership, but
on all the major (for us at least) issues he's a moderate who's getting even more vocal than I. :hi:

9. Everyone knows my "tried to be with a conservative 'Dem'" story.
To post that it "didn't work out" would be an understatement. The break had less to do with views about government and society and more to do with the fact that he's a gigantic asshole, but you'd think I would have seen that coming.

10. I've said this before and will say it again:
I won't share my "cookies" with someone who won't defend the "bakery." That leaves out most conservatives and even a few liberals.

16. These Cookies that you speak of.....
Are they good cookies.....

I love cookies.....

And everyone knows that you can't have a really really good cookie with out a great bakery....

So I will defend the right of every cookie lover by protecting the bakery with every ounce of life I have....

12. My SO had very few political convictions when I met him
The ones he did have tended toward the conservative mainly because he is a gun enthusiast. Since I am a liberal gun enthusiast, I had some credibility with him.

He's very into the environment, and helping people, and many types of things on a personal level that fit more of a liberal viewpoint so when I began educating him politically, he was cautious but eventually won over.

He's never been political before (had never voted! he's 45!) and had kind of taken what he'd heard at face value without much analysing. By the time of the 2004 election, he was watching the debates, cheering Kerry's answers, belittling Bush's and getting more animated than I was.

He voted (Democratic) for the first time in his life in that election and has become a pretty good liberal.

I consider him my life's work. :)

Nice work!

I converted my mom from a

"Don't raise my taxes/damned N words/"Gays should all go back in the closet" Republican to a "Volunteering for Howard Dean Democrat. It's a nice little feather for one's cap, I'll agree.

Yay us!

13. I can't be with somebody who doesn't share my politics
I've tried it before, and it's never worked out. My political/social beliefs are such an important part of my life that it just isn't possible to be with somebody who doesn't share them in some way.

15. As most DU-ers know, my lovely, wonderful wife is a conservative.
She's old-school, though; a Barry Goldwater-style conservative who opposes the war, and despises B*sh. Hell, she hated Ronald Reagan, so you know she's got it going on. We try to avoid political discussions, though. And we had a huge fight yesterday about Hurricaine Katrina; there is a part of her that wonders of Katrina was NO's punishment for voodoo, Mardi Gras, and so on. I went nuclear on her. The old "hand of God" shit doesn't play with me. I'm pretty sure the New Testament was proof that God would not do massive, full-blown wipe-outs anymore,(unless it was the whole world). If God is going to punish somebody for his transgressions, I'm pretty sure that will happen after said person is dead. Thousands of people are dead, I told her. Do you really think God would rub out innocent people because New Orleans was party central? I don't think so.

We're still mad at each other. But she gave me a butt-pat before leaving for work this morning, so maybe everything will be okay.

17. I could date a conservative
I could NOT date anyone who currently supports Bush. There's a difference.

As for conservatives being kind and caring...yes, of course they can be. My mom is conservative, and she's also one of the nicest people I know. There's just some weird disconnect in logic...she fails to see how Bush & Co. are causing the harm that she is actually very much against. For example, she truly and honestly cares about the people in New Orleans. If she were there, she would be risking her life to help them. And yet, she can't seem to see that her support of Bush has played a role in causing the harm. But that doesn't make her mean or uncaring.

19. My SO is liberal, save one or two key issues...
Guns, death penalty and criminal justice.

Those issues, for him, are pretty important, but we agree about everything else for the most part. We just don't talk about the few subjects we don't agree on since both of us are steadfast in our opinions. :)
