Cate Blanchett to star in "Elizabeth" sequel
Blanchett to star in Elizabeth sequel

Sep 6, 2005

Actors Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen will star in the movie The Golden Age, a sequel to 1998's Oscar winning period film Elizabeth, according to Variety.

Blanchett will reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth I

<snip>

The follow-up will focus on the relationship between Elizabeth I and Walter Raleigh, to be played by Owen.

Rush will reprise his role as Sir Francis Walsingham... <snip>

Filming will begin in April.

*********

Yay! I liked "Elizabeth" - I hope the sequel is just as good (or even better).

1. The first was excellent.
It played history for what it is, high drama.

There were a few distortions, but it ranks as one of my top 10 favorites.

2. i find Geoffrey Rush a highly nuanced actor...
enjoyed his Walsingham immensely, very much looking forward to any sequel but equally interested & rather hoping sequel will not be just a period-rip-off-piece

I don't know anybody who thought Gwynneth could act. :)

11. See Post #10
I've read, and have been personally told, that word on the Hollywood street is that the wonderful Cate B. didn't get an Oscar because the film was soooo inaccurate. She finally got one last year, though. Cate is so good in everything she does....

6. I hope they work in the part about the Spanish Armada
No film has really done that justice. Brave England! Also Walter Raleigh lost his life later on because the cowardly successor to Elizabeth I was too scared of Spain.

9. Thank you....I am sick of all the film recycling we are seeing of late.
Are there no new ideas out there. I mean Bush has given fodder for so many "When the Government goes Wrong" ideas, one would think... :hi:

12. I know Elizabeth was a great movie with great actors....
I just want to hear about other historical characters.

History is so fascinating. Plus, you bring up a good point about all the film recycling.

10. Hopefully is more accurate than the first
Hair-raisingly inaccurate, and no reason to be! Elizabeth I Regina's story is so incredibly, there's no reason to change it. People in the biz say this cost her the Oscar for Best Actress.

13. History tells such fascinating stories...
why oh why do they always have to change things? :(

That's interesting what you say, but HOW would Hollywood types know it was very inaccurate? Are they all history buffs or what? ;)

I've never seen the movie so I cannot say anything on the matter. :)

16. But Paltrow won for "Shakespeare in Love"
I enjoyed that movie, but it was hardly historically accurate.

Gwyneth Paltrow also starred in the movie "Emma"--but Kate Beckinsale in the BBC version was far better.

17. One can make a case that "William Shakespeare" wasn't who he
really was, just a "nom de plume" for a bunch of wacky 16th century writers who needed(or wanted) to remain anonymous. :silly:

But I digress... :)

19. Oh God! Another Oxfordian.
Someone once said that Oxfordians must all be mentally unbalanced. Because they would rather believe any cockamamie, outlandish explanation than admit to the simple notion that William Shakespeare really was William Shakespeare.

23. Well get your arguments ready, 'cause I'm a die-hard Stratfordian.
You know, the ones who believe Shakespeare was really Shakespeare, and not Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh, or that infamous Arab nobleman, Sheik Zubayr! B-)

It is always so facinating to hear the support for each "candidate" for the REAL writer of The Bard's works. Where's my popcorn.....
