Is this any way to run a company?

Ok, so I got temporarily laid off a couple of weeks ago now. I've done my wallowing in self pity and despair.

I have every reason to think I can go back to that job on Monday, 9/12.

:rant:
Here's the thing that leaves me scratching my head:

I was getting paid a very generous salary for what I was doing. The minute I got laid off, I did the expected thing for a laissez-faire, free-market worker such as myself. I went to talk to other recuiters to see what's out there.

I'm now getting offered jobs that pay more (same exact work with the same extact tools, mind you )! From the same company!

Looking at this from a purely capitalist POV, what did the company gain by laying me off in the first place if they are simply going to fit me in somewhere else at a higher salary?

Don't get me wrong; I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. I'll gladly take the money! It's just that: IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A COMPANY?

Does anybody have any insight into this madness?

1. Maybe the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.
And, no, that isn't any way to run a company. I'd certainly let the powers that be know. If this is SOP, then you might be heading for a permanent layoff.

that the left doesn't know what the right is doing. :crazy:

This is a Fortune 500 company that devolved into that organization style that says each LOB should be treated like a separate, functioning business on its own. So at that level, I'm not surprised that my division is paying less than another division that is interested in me.

The company, as a whole, is competing against itself, it seems.

3. Sounds strange to me
but still typical of the corporate mentality. I deal with another company mindset entirely. I'm not getting paid a generous salary at all. But the minute I say I'm leaving then they'll want to talk about my compensation. They get away with paying as little as possible until people start leaving then wonder why long term employees jump ship. But they always fall back on the consultant's reports for compensation. Then again lazy management always does.

It tends to happen in larger companies where department A is not funded as generously as department B. Often the funding levels change.

There's some rumours in the wind that in the company I work for currently, there may be an attempt to separate and potentially sever. That limits the amount of funding the corporate HQ wants to pour into the department to the minimum necessary to insure it's viability for potential sale.

Whereas the R & D people are getting bucks and over fist, - in hopes that a product they've been working on will pay off big.

If they were smart, they'd have transferred some of the qualified staff from one department to the other, but often there is a work lag. Frex: R&D doesn't need people this month, but they will in October, etc.

Take a job elsewhere then come back after a year. So typical of the games played around here.

11. our state govt works that way, too.
people who have been here for 25 years make about 10% less than those hired 1 month ago at the same "pay grade level".
