Help me with New Orleans themed songs
OK, so I'm making a little New Orleans CD for myself to help me cope, and I need help with New Orleans themed songs. I'm just not that up on the southern blues tradition or the zydeco tradition to know many songs from there, but any help is good. I'm gonna hit some of my favorites, but this is obviously a short list:

Do you Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans - Louis Armstrong version
City of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie version
Baby Please Don't Go - Van Morrison
Bloodletting - Concrete Blond
Basin Street Blues - Louis Prima version

You get the idea?

10. Yeah, I can do that
but i'd rather get personal feedback, yeah? notice it leaves out a couple of the songs that i picked because they don't include "new orleans" in the title?

3. *A* little New Orleans CD??
Better get Mr. Burner ready for Vols. 2, 3,...

Blackwater - Doobie Bros.
Sheik of Arabi - Louis Armstrong. The Arabi in question is not in the ME but in hard-hit St. Bernard Parish.

7. "Heart of the Night" by Poco
In the heart of the night
In the cool southern rain
There's a full moon in sight
Shining down on the Pontchartrain

And the river she rises
Like she used to do
She's so full of surprises
She reminds me of you
In the heart of the night

There's a nightbird singing
Right on through till the dawn
And the streets are still ringing
With people carrying on

It's been so long waiting
Just to be here again
Anticipating
All the time I could spend
In the heart of the night down in New Orleans
In the heart of the night down in New Orleans

And I trust in your love never falling down
And I trust in your love
Just like I do in this town never falling down

And I'm so glad to be back in New Orleans
Please don't wake me, don't shake me,
If this is only just a dream
It's the only place I can face that feels so right
Below that Dixie moon and loving you
In the Heart of the Night

===========

Yeah, it's cheeezy, but it's about NOLA.

8. New Orleans is Sinking - The tragically hip
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 02:39 PM by HEyHEY
Bourbon blues on the street loose and complete
Under skies all smoky blue-green
I can Forksake the dixie dead shake
So we dance the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom What's wrong? What's Going On
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said" Hey North you're south shut you big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about thoes years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had My hand in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above and said hey man thanks
Some time I fell so good I gotta scream
She says Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said I swear to god she said

My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

9. Baby Please Don't Go
was originally a country blues by Big Joe Williams, but Muddy Waters reworked it and made it a big hit in the early '50s with his band

16. Take Me To The Mardi Gras - Paul Simon
C'mon take me to the Mardi Gras
Where the people sing and play
Where the dancing is elite
And there's music in the street
Both night and day

Hurry take me to the Mardi Gras
In the city of my dreams
You can legalize your lows
You can wear your summer clothes
In the New Orleans

And I will lay my burden down
Rest my head upon that shore
And when I wear that starry crown
I won't be wanting anymore

Take your burdens to the Mardi Gras
Let the music wash your soul
You can mingle in the street
You can jingle to the beat of the jelly roll
Tumba, tumba, tumba, Mardi Gras
Tumba, tumba, tumba, day
