I like to think that we are the good guys because we oppose things like torture, starvation, human misery and grave desecration, etc. Have we no decency, at long last, have we no decency?

20. I have said that before about violence

lots of movies like to show a bully or abuser getting the crap beaten out of him. The viewer thinks that it is justified that "he is getting what is coming to him" but that is precisely what every abuser believes, that their violence is justified. I do not approve of torture, either before or after death. What good does more suffering do? It is like a Dirty Harry re-write of the good Samaritan. The Samaritan sees the traveller lying injured by the side of the road, pulls out his .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun made, and hunts the bandits down and blows them away. That might help their future victims, but it does nothing for the wounded traveller on the road to Jericho. In Jesus' story, the good Samaritan is not the one who delivers vengeance, but the one who delivers aid. I would hope rather that Bush looks into his soul and at his actions and decides to turn away from evil.
