How hard is it to learn Flash animation, and what do you need to do it?

Or is there a better program/method to use out there?

I'd love to learn it but can't afford to take a class. I've managed to learn other things like Photoshop and Illustrator on my own, but animation seems like a whole new ballpark.

Any advice?

1. think linearly

the layers work on a timeline unlike the static layers in photoshop/illustrator. it's not bad but the scripting language can be a head scratcher. Get it and play around with it. Look for tutorials on the web too, that's one of the tools I used, and try to find someone who uses it regularly to give you pointers.

2. so it's closer to iMovie or Final Cut Pro sort of stuff

in terms of "placing objects" or thinking about getting from point A to B? (I don't know if that made sense--just trying to wrap my head around it).

Scripting language--just the name sounds like a headache.

4. actually, both

iMovie/FCPro both use layered linear timelines. Flash uses it as well, BUT Flash can also mimic the static layers of Photoshop/Illustrator when creating graphic elements to drop into your library then onto the stage (the stage is where the animation takes place).

You have to think in two dimensions, top to bottom like Photoshop and left to right like iMovie.
