What survival skills do you have?
If you were stuck in the bayou when the hurrican hit, or anywhere for that matter and suddenly were on your own what skills do you have that would help you survive?

Mine:
I can build a boat with hand tools.
I can identify some edible plants.
I can start a fire with flint and steel or a bow drill.
I can fish and know how to build a primitive fish trap.

and 2 of my friends went camping in a cabin. We forgot fishing bait, and the nearest town was a good bit away. I dug in the mud for bait and did a pretty good job. All of the bait I got caught us some fish. Of course we threw the fish back, but I can do that at least. I thought I found grub worms, turned out to be big horse-fly maggots. Yuck!!!!!

46. I can do that!
I spent a lot of time on my grandpa's farm growing up, so I'm not too shabby in terms of butchering knowledge. I don't want to, but if I had to I could kill chickens or other small animals for food, gut 'em, and prepare them. I can grow things. I can sew stuff. I have enough medical knowledge to treat minor wounds, (and of course CPR and other basic first aid). I could probably be a decent lay midwife as well.

I look like a candy ass, but I'm not. :7

I wish I knew how to distill water somehow, but I suppose I know enough to be able to start a fire, boil it, and make it safe for drinking that way.

18. I could make a basic lean-to shelter.
I can cook over an open flame. I can make fire w/ flint. I can gather (I've been mushroom hunting so I could get mushrooms at least). I garden. I can fish. And I've killed and prepared a chicken (also helped prepare a deer twice-strung it up, gutted, skinned, etc).

We could live but it'd suck w/ no power.

21. I can make a fire
using sticks, or a broken shard of glass.

I also know how to cook food without fire just by using the heat of the sun and a sheet of glass or plastic.

I can gut, clean, bone out, prep and cook just about anything.

I know what most plants and herbs in this area are, which are used in traditional native cooking and which are curative or poisonous.

I know where to find drinkable water.

I can plant and grow vegetables and herbs.

I know how to build a still and distill grain alcohol.

I know how to ferment grapes and berries into wine.

I know how to create a yeast culture using just grapes and a little flour.

I have large passages of books committed to memory and endless stories I could tell around the campfire.

I know the rudiments of engineering, physics and chemistry and can apply them to projects when necessary.

I know how to conserve water and still stay within the bounds of hygiene.

I know how to dig a latrine.

I know how to fashion a canoe.

Golly, there's more. I may be fragile but I'm not useless. :hi:

So I can tell you you're about to eat a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) with a garnish of House Sparrow (Passer domesticus).

I can also tell you that a city bird can host 42 different KINDS of ecto- and endoparasites, so you better cook that shit good.

I'd be doomed. Seriously, I really don't have many "skills" in the survival dept. However, I do have a mobile satellite phone for emergencies. My parents got me and my brother one earlier this year just in case. In case of emergency, I simply call my parent's personal concierge and she will take care of any travel or housing arrangements I need. Never had to use it, but after recent events, it's nice to know it's there.

44. I can make a kiln!! Gather acorns and pine nuts...
build a shelter out of branches, or mud or wattle and daub or cob.

Build a house with hand tools.

Make a water still. Find clay seams and throw a pot.

Make a rope or a boat with hand tools.

Make a knife from a leaf spring.

Grow food. Coppice firewood so we don't run out.

Survival is not a huge problem in the Sacremento Valley. We send you all mountains of food. In my town if society collapses we will all sit around fat and happy eating almonds, peaches, walnuts and olives. Not exactly a challenge.
