What's a good enviro-friendly weed killer/killing method?
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 01:11 PM by dolo amber
NOT THAT KIND OF WEED. :grr:

:P

So yeah, anyway...

I bought this (supposedly) not-too-vile Roundup thing and went to town...these weeds are not doing any sort of accelerated nor enthusiastic dying to my eye. :(

I don't really *want* to use the super dreadful stuff, but I will have to if forced...these damn things are cracking the pavement in my driveway. x(

1. Vinegar.
The cheap stuff you buy at the grocery store works fine. Get a gallon and just pour it on. It'll kill everything, though, so watch out. You also have to renew it.

8. Just plain ol' white vinegar?
Not diluted or anything?

12. Yep.
The regular is already diluted. If you buy the more expensive horticultural vinegar at an organic gardening store it's more concentrated and you should dilute it, but if you just go to the Piggly Wiggly :P and pick up a gallon for 1.29 you should use it at strength. Works like a champ.

2. Use a large black tarp
to cover the driveway, or at least the parts that have weeds. Anchor it down with rocks. This starves them of water and sunlight, and makes it too hot underneath for weeds to survive.

6. That sounds like a good plan
I'll just have to use many wee tarps, as they're also over places I need to drive. :hi:

It's only available on the Black Market. But it's very lethal.

have to crouch down.

Try www.northerntool.com

28. I'll second the propane torch suggestion, but be prepared...
for this project to take a LONG time. And when you're all done, it will seem like a much bigger pain in the a$$ than you bargained for.

I've had experience with the propane thing. It works. But it is the most labor-intensive way to handle the problem that there is.

There is an organic weed killing product called Burnout. But you could also use Vinegar. Apply on a sunny day and should work in a couple hours or less.

Ortho has lied to you. Imagine that!

The torch is an ezcellent idea-just don't use it in windy conditions.

The vinegar is a good idea-but nothing will grow where you put it for a long time-so be careful!

Black plastic is great-especially if you have a large area to kill

26. boiling water
It's fast, it's cheap, and good new plants can grow there right away.

It beats the hell out of just pulling the offending weeds, IMO.

pour salt water in them, make it very strong. it'll dehydrate the plant. dig out whatever ones you can, though, before you put anything on them.

You could put bush in charge of your lawn for a while. That should end up killing them, or something like that.
