3. Have to admit I really never listened to their music. |
|
The whole boy-band thing was pretty repulsive to me.

10. Of course. If it went the other way with Britney Spears, or someone |
|
I'd be asking about Rammstein or the like.

all obscure (if talented) UK bands from the 80s who went largely unnoticed in their time.

5. The Comsat Angels sound a bit like them |
|
The first three 'Sats LPs are being reissued (again)-- they're well worth tracking down: www.comsatangels.net. They were also an influence on the Chameleons, as well as U2, believe it or not.
the Sound are a bit edgier, and once shared a label with Echo & The Bunnymen in the early 80s.

ON EDIT: added Megan Slankard, Shanti, Raveonettes, Dar Williams, Tegan And Sara, and The Jayhawks. Those came to mind right now. OK, I will stop now, even though there are more.
Ones that have gone unnoticed by the majority of music fans:
Kay Hanley Hope Partlow (critically underrated so far - I proudly like her) Thea Gilmore Maria Mena Butterfly Boucher Megan Slankard Shanti Tegan And Sara Raveonettes Dar Williams The Jayhawks Cindy Alexander Sufjan Stevens Elliott Smith Amy Rigby Tristan Prettyman Hope 7 Teenage Fanclub Fisher Martha Wainwright Rufus Wainwright Nina Gordon Sleater-Kinney Alexz Johnson (outside of Canada) Courtney Jaye The Wallflowers (lost popularity for no good reason) Bree Sharp (lost popularity for no good reason) Mary Gauthier Kathleen Edwards Kasey Chambers Steve Earle Lucinda Williams Miranda Lambert (hasn't taken off like she should) Marion Raven/M2M Tracy Bonham Penelope Houston Jo Davidson Abra Moore The Painkillers Laura Dawn Decemberists Tracy Bonham Eisley Miss Mary Doves Aslyn Annie (should be bigger than Britney) Go-Betweens Joseph Arthur Postal Service and possibly Death Cab For Cutie
Lots more..
I saw that the New Pornographers and Anna Nalick are on the Billboard chart - yea!

I haven't heard of most of them and I try to hear/support bands that are unknown. Thank you.

Some of them are indie, some rocky, some country, some poppy - it's really a mixture.
I suppose you've heard of Aimee Mann. She doesn't get the recognition she deserves.
I know I left out quite a few, but it's a good start. :hi:

Iced Earth (specifically for Something Wicked This Way Comes) Blind Guardian (though their English skills are a bit lacking, but still good) Axl Rose (he became an icon and everyone forgot that he could fuckin' write) Scott Weiland (when he's focused) Nick Cave Leonard Cohen (if we're not talking about about pop success) Sisters of Mercy Type O Negative Violent Femmes (for my wife, I personally can't stand'em) Ours (for one album only "Distorted Lullabies) The Fucking Champs (wonderful instrumental metal band) Last of the Juanitas (wonderful rock band, somewhat political lyrics)
I saw the last two live, so I'm kinda partial. But, LotJ are awesome! Come back to Fayetteville!

... aka Iggy Pop, known for his wild stage personna but actually should be known for his first-rate songwriting. Yes, he's really good. :)

23. I'm listening to Crass right now |
|
So I'll say...
CRASS!
I am fascinated by them. I think they are one of the most brilliant and underrated punk bands, definitely. And I never hear mention of them on any of the punk documentaries or in any of those ubiquitous "Greatest _____" Lists you see in Rolling Stone or Spin or whatever. But I think they are probably one of the most influential punk bands ever. Or am I wrong??? Maybe nobody really likes them and I am just a dork. :P

24. OK... and I'm NOT big fan but... Mariah Carey |
|
She writes her own songs, that I find impressive.
Underrated bands:
Chicago (true, Kath's death was a true jump-the-shark moment)
Isley Brothers (besides their longevity, the heavy-metal aspect of their funk, courtesy of Brother Ernie, never seemed to get its props)
