So, I saw Deer Hunter for the first time tonight. |
|
I can't really say why I haven't watched it before. I like all the cast, so I figured it was time to watch it, finally.
Very sobering. Chris Walken did a great job, as did Robert DeNiro.

That is one of those movies everybody should watch, and for some reason, I just had not watched it up until today.

3. another depressing movie set (partly) in western PA |
|
funny how when they go hunting it's in the rockies not the nearby appalachians....
that and "all the right moves" are in a race for depressing Western PA steeltown movies...

4. And all the church scenes were shot in Cleveland |
|
And the Steel Mills were in Stuebenville.....
I think the movie is dated.....
But it captured the moment very very well.....

5. When I think of some of the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen.. |
|
it's right up there in the top five for me. I went when I was in my 20's and a friend and I were supposed to go out to party afterwards. We were so devastated that we just went and had some coffee (and that was BEFORE it was cool to go and have coffee). The acting was incredible.

6. Yea it had that effect on me as well... |
|
But, it is almost unwatchable now.......
Too many cinematic tricks by a director trying to hard to make a statement.....
He should have let the story play out more without all the overt symbolism.....

7. I heard the spit scene was ad- libbed |
|
where Walken spits in DeNiro's face, totally unscripted. Soemthing about DeNiro egging Walken off set, trying to get him riled up and in character

He is just sort of....off. Just slightly offbeat, and that is cool to me.
The scene with the russian roulette was heartbreaking, though. He was just a normal guy, and the war totally fucked his mind up. The way they showed how all the lives were effected was tragic.

Sorry for the flippancy. It really is a great movie. Who would have thought that certified freak Cimino had such a masterpiece within him. Beautiful film

10. Some of the best acting ever filmed! |
|
DeNiro and Walken are brilliant in the film.
The whole movie still gives me the creeps as to how that war destroyed so many lives.
The intermix of the mundane with the hyperviolence is unnerving.

12. Yes, at points it was even a little too slow, but that is life. |
|
The stuff at the steel mill, and the wedding reception scenes sort of dragged. I do think it was realistic, though, and maybe that is what they were shooting for.

That scene on the mountain always gets me. A great movie.
I spent two years trying to perfect Stanley Myer's guitar theme - John Williams played it so brilliantly that I still get goosebumps listening to it. I still can't get part of it right, but every once in a while I try again. Maybe someday.
