PHILADELPHIA -- A small magnet school in northwest Philadelphia has added a focus on peace this year.
It's in response to community activists who sought an alternative to the city school district's two military academies.
The newly converted Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice opened Tuesday.
Its mission is educating students on peaceful ways to resolve local and global conflicts.
The school draws its 260 students in grades nine through 12 from around the city.
It's a new concept in Philadelphia, although there is at least one other, in Chicago.
In addition to academics, the school will offer courses such as "HIPHOP" -- Help Increase Peace, Healing Our Planet.
That will teach conflict resolution, self-awareness and multicultural sensitivities.
Five to eight peace seminars are also planned, with special speakers and performances to be held throughout the year.
