Question for anyone --- is it safe to carry a container of gas in my CRV? |
|
What about the fumes? What about the heat, or sunlight?
Maybe this is a stupid question that I should know the answer to, but any help would be appreciated.

I would think that an approved canister would be okay. No?

2. I have a CRV - I wouldn't do it. |
|
Actually, I wouldn't keep a full gas can in any vehicle.

6. Get a NEW approved container from a auto parts store |
|
or hardware store and follow the directions and regulations. It is probably not the best thing you could possibly do, but I think if you keep it out of sunlight, away from the rear door/tailgate, and keep it closed then you should be fine.

12. I'm not sure it's sufficient anywhere close to where I want to go, however |
|
Might be better to be safe than sorry.

19. definitely there's gas in hammond and covington |
|
if you're coming down 1-55 you could top off in hammond
i saw gas, lights, big national guard presence there, on thursday, in fact, the university started classes there on thursday
there are also lots of stores open such as home depot, lowes, walmart, rouse's (grocery), drugstores, and plenty of gas stations in covington, la on 190 although this might not be as convenient
i don't know the situation if you're coming from the west on 10, earlier in the week there were shortages in baton rouge but they could be clear now
there may be gas closer to gonzales or in gonzales but i really only want to report on what i saw for myself
the shortages in central mississippi seem to be cleared up if this info helps anyone

23. I'm not sure what is the best route---east on I-20, then south, |
|
or I-45 to Houston, then east?

9. Not terribly safe, and probably not legal. |
|
Most jurisdictions prohibit the transport of fuels in the passenger compartment of vehicles.

|
i didn't see anyone stopped for carrying gas
again, not ideal, but these are not normal times
the situation was dire in mississippi earlier in the week but there is good supply now

13. I just store my gas in a box full of jelly jars. |
|
I even cut a hole in the box so that the seat belt can hold it nice and tight. I pissed in a few of the jelly jars in case some steals my box o gas. That'll teach them to steal my damn gas.

18. There was a fire at the gas line in Biloxi when I was there |
|
Started by static electricity. The pavement was on fire as well as the gas cans in the back of this guys truck and the guy's arm. Scared the shit out of me and everyone else. They got it put out before it exploded. Be sure when you fill the cans NOT to have them in the back of your vehicle at the time. I still don't know exactly what a CRV is though.

20. it's a little honda thing-y |
|
i can identify, i have a fuel efficient car but it feels it need not have a very big gas tank
so it ends up i can't really go any further than the dude w. the bad gas mileage but a huge gas tank to make up for it

24. ALWAYS!! place a gas can on the ground while filling it! |
|
Particularly with the plastic/vinyl gas cans. Static electricity can build up when fuelling the cans, and in rare occasions, discharge as a spark which can ignite the gas.
Placing the cans on the pavement or dirt will ground them, and prevent the build-up of static charges.
BTW, for gasoline storage, a full container is far less dangerous to transport than a partially filled one. Liquid gasoline is NOT flammable; it's the vapour which is combustible. Keeping cans as full as possible keeps vapour to a minimum.
