1. If the antenna still works, electrical tape or friction tape should work

2. it doesn't always detect the antenna

it always detects my home antenna, so it's not the unit, the antenna is detected when the white end is bent

4. sounds like a loose connection?
You can duck tape a cable to antenna connection.

7. the only tape I have is scotch transparent tape

6. yes it is
it detects it when the end is bent but not when it is straight
