I have discovered a new singer to obsess over!
Not that Phil Ochs will ever be usurped in my obsessions, mind you...but while I was reading about my favorite writer, I learned that one of her favorite singers was Dory Previn. So I have been listening to Previn's songs, and yeah, she's really good. And apparently she is still alive, and has not killed herself (unlike most writers/musicians I get hooked on).

An example of Previn's lyrics:

Mythical Kings and Iguanas by Dory Previn
i have flown
to star-stained heights
on bent and battered wings
in search of
mythical kings
mythical kings
sure that everything of worth
is in the sky and not the earth
and i never learned
to make my way
down
down
down
where the iguanas play
i have ridden
comet tails
in search of magic rings
to conjure
mythical kings
mythical kings
singing scraps of angel-song
high is right and low is wrong
i never taught
myself to give
down
down
down
where the iguanas live

astral walks i try to take
i sit and throw i ching
aesthetic bards
and tarot cards
are the cords to which i cling
don't break my strings
(i wish you would)
or i will fall
(i wish i could
i wish i could
i wish i could)

curse the mind
that mounts the clouds
in search of mythical kings
and only
mystical things
mystical things
cry for the soul
that will not face
the body as an equal place
and i never learned
to touch for real
or fell the things
iguanas feel
down
down
down
where they play
teach me
teach me
teach me
reach me

Yummy stuff!

1. How funny
Last night I wanted to play my old Dory Previn albums:

"Dory Previn"
and
"On My Way to Where"

Particularly like "Twenty-Mile Zone"

Your discovering a new singer made me feel ancient.

2. Aw, you aren't ancient; I'm just under-enculturated
"Twenty-Mile Zone" was Alice Sheldon's favorite song, which is how I found Previn. What an *amazing* voice...

6. Don't know if Dory Previn had much air play
A high school psych teacher shared with the class "Twenty-Mile Zone" and "Beware of Young Girls". (The young girl being Mia Farrow)

7. Apparently she wrote a lot of movie songs
Interesting about the psych teacher; Alice Sheldon was a psychologist, and I'm a psych major...weird connections, if I could think delusionally I'd see meaning there...

She was one of my private pleasures. Have you ever listened to Ralph McTell? English folkie....I think he's still around too. He wrote "Streets of London" He's written some beautiful lyrics as well.
