What is your favorite dog breed?
Putting aside how wonderful mixed breeds are, what is your favorite pure-bred?

I love the Rhodesian Ridgeback for a larger size dog. And for a smaller size, I love the Miniature Pinscher (since I own one). For a middle (kind of big) size dog, I have to go with the Airedale Terrier. But there are so many more that I love.

Great dogs, once they gnaw through a few tons of pyjamas and socks as puppies.

They get quite large. They aren't recognized by the AKC or CKC. That isn't the best pic of him, but he is very pretty. My mini-pin is a feisty little thing. She has so much personality. More than any other dog I have had or currently have. And I've had a lot.

I can never be without a Pyr again. Fargo is cuddly, and goofy, and an amazing watchdog. NOTHING happens in the immediate vicinity of our house without him knowing about it.

He's also a good latchkey dog. He can hang out all day waiting for his people to get home and not stress about it too much.

I adore my baby. :loveya:

And he's an inside dog. Horribly spoiled. Has his own bed, and his own room, and bones and toys galore.

He gets walkies first thing in the morning when we wake up, and walkies when we get home in the evening, and sometimes another before bedtime. He's only had a few accidents, and those were only during thunderstorms. Him HATES thunderstorms.

Life's rough for Fargs.

We have a doggie door so they go in and out as they please. They sleep in the bed with my hubby and me. Oh such a rough life! I guess, though, if you have him in TX, I could possibly have one in MS. None of my dogs are strictly outside dogs. They have the option to be in or out at all times (unless I am mopping, then they have to stay outside until floor dries)!

Double coated breeds are insulated from the heat and do much better WITH their coats.

reprehensor and I considered a Newfoundland as well. We wanted to name him Gordie (nice Canadian name for a nice Canadian dog). But Pyrs are good when you're gone all day. That sold us. And I found a Pyr rescue group here in Texas.

It took me ages to get Fargo. Lots of single girl working-and-going-to-college time trapped in apartments with a cat. I wanted a dog SO bad. He's my baby.

Hope you get your furry sweetheart someday!

23. Well, now, I must put in a word for the dog we owned
When my daughters were growing up...the glorious and energetic Dalmation!

They are not for everyone...very energetic and need to run and play a lot...

BUT ours was super-smart and loving...I called her my third daughter...

They do have VERY long puppy-hoods...we did despair that she would ever grow up and get more settled down...but she did...

My old dog (Rosie) was a mutt from the K-zoo shelter. She looked like some kind of freakish combination of Bouvier and Scotty terrier. The vet called her a "terrier mix".

My current dog (Katie) is a mutt from the Michigan Humane Society shelter in Detroit (The "Animal Cops: Detroit" shelter). They called her a "shepard chow mix", but she is small to be either. The vet thinks she's at least part Norweigian Elkhound. I don't know, but she's really cute and has a very sweet disposition.

I've once seen a very big rottie go between the narrow gap between two posts on a railed porch. just to get on the porch quicker to give everybody big wet kisses. it was amazing seeing this gigantic dog go thru such a thin railing. they are incredibly built dogs, not just in terms of size but in their overall form.

They are phenomenally wonderful dogs. Real sweethearts. If I ever get a home with a yard, there is a certain Mastiff rescue that will be getting a telephone call from me.

139. Oh dear....
The humble chihuahua has something to prove, so it tends to go for the kill bite. As opposed to these big guys, who feel no need to prove their mettle and just lounge about. So see, you'd probably be safer in the vicinity of a mastiff.

And that's one to grow on.....

65. we've had ...
a keeshond ... gentle, intelligent, beautiful, good watch dog, wonderful companion.

then we've had a beagle and an australian terrier ... the beagle was gentle, refined and lady like, we adopted her from an animal rescue center... whoever owned her first must have really pampered her. she was always so refined and lady like. one time when it was very cold (here in south florida) and i had to take our australian terrier to the vet, she either wanted to come, or she wanted to get out in the cold wintry wind. neighbors tell me that she howled the entire time i was gone with the australian terrier and did not stop until we got back.

the australian terrier was a little fluff ball. he loved to cuddle, make sure he always grabbed your attention, he was a leaper, and he loved to play with the beagle.

we now have a mini pinscher and just recently added a yorkie mix (although a friend tells me he looks more like a pure yorkie).

our mini pinscher is more like a philosopher dog ... but he loves to be picked up and held...but about the only way he lets you know is that he stands next to your feet until you do pick him up and hold him.

our yorkie mix stands on his two hind legs, and with his two front paws he pulls your arms to get your attention, he loves to play ball, chew old shoes, jump on the table or sit himself on a chair at the table if any space is left between the table and chair. he too loves to cuddle up in your arms and he loves to invite our minipinscher to play, although the mini-pin is older, philosophical about things and not include to go around puppy playing at all.

i don't think i can choose a favorite. i have loved each and everyone . the two that we have now, and those who have already gone, including another little minipinscher i did not mention before in this post. even when she loved to wake us up at 1:30 in the morning and demand her dinner/or breakfast/ or whatever it was that she thought she was demanding at that time of morning.

84. I have a mini-pin also.
She is so bossy and feisty. It's her way or no way. She is truly a lap dog. She doesn't give you a choice. If she wants to sit in your lap, then that is just the way it is going to be. She also sleeps in between my husband and me. And she has to be under the covers with her head on the pillow. It is so funny.

66. Beagles, hands down
I've got a ten year old beagle who came down with a spinal disease as a puppy. The only thing that saved her life was a cortisone shot that stunted her growth. So she still looks like a cute little puppy. About two years ago she came down with Cushing's Disease which affects her adrenal glands so she's lost some fur but is still as cute as ever.

Nothing is better than a beagle, even with all that's wrong with her.

Chihuahuas are really cool too. They have a very interesting, and distinct, history.

90. Here are mine!
I love dachshunds... big dogs trapped in small bodies!

I love the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I rescued one from an Upper East Side shelter and her personality is just wonderful. She likes to be the boss and will nip your heels if she thinks you're not going where she wants you to go! Wonderful little dog!

Then, I am also partial to siberian huskies, partly because I have one. They are so beautiful on the outside and even more beautiful on the outside. Very playful and extremely intelligent, they love company and are great escape artists. My 'girl' has happily become an apartment loafing dog. She likes activity, but prefers a good nap in our company (huskies like company).

My other one is the chow chow, which I also have. We rescued her from the street in the middle of winter, as she was dying from starvation. She is a wonderful dog, very motherly toward her 'sister' husky and her little dachshund friends. She absolutely cannot stand the corgi, though! She is loyal and very affectionate to the people she likes. However, she does not like most other dogs. She likes to nap a lot and keeps great company to us and the husky.

I like all dogs (better than I like people), regardless of breed or mix. All dog breeds can be good or bad, depending on how the dog is treated.

Somehow Boxers know when you are down in the dumps and start doing the wackiest things imaginable to cheer you up. My daughter has two of them who curl up like kidney beans and shake their entire hind quarters and tail when they see you and then lick you from head to toe nonstop. They also think they are lapdogs and since one is 75 lbs and the other 90 lbs you have to fight them for the couch.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 09:11 PM by Awsi Dooger
I've had nothing but awesome experiences with two of them, the toy variety. So smart and playful and friendly. Also very willing to speak up to protect the homestead, and throw themselves around in the backyard dirt.

My wonderful apricot poodle Awsi was put to sleep on July 19. He was just shy of 15 years and 10 months. I took my DU user name from him. Awsi had a rough final year or so, losing his hearing and nearly all of his sight, due to cataracts. I found out that pure bred toy poodles are the most vulnerable to cataracts of any type of dog.

Even to the end, Awsi was still faithfully able to make his way into the den where I keep my computer and lay down on the oval green rug I bought for him. Awsi never did like the hard tile. He lost his appetite in the final days and wouldn't even drink. After two days at the vet's and on IVs I had to accept it was his time. You were a terrific pal, Awsi dooger.

...is a Pitt Bull. She has an ow-ie on her leg but she is happy nonetheless, a bit slow in the pottie-training department. Her name is biscuit, a lovely blue-nosed lass whom I desperately wish I could keep..... (My kingdom for a digital camera right now!)

We had one as a kid. But mutts are my favorite dogs, though.

146. Brussels Griffon ala movie "As Good As It Gets"
I only have a Maine Coon cat and a parrot, myself, but was charmed by the little critter.
I think he stole the show!

151. Airedales, Welsh Terriers, and Wire Fox Terriers
We call them "square dogs" because their features are boxy. I love them so much and can't wait until I can have one. Although I adore just about all dog breeds except the really yippy ones.

155. I've always liked Akitas
I used to backpack with a guy that had an Akita. He used to load him down with 20 lbs of gear, water and food. He'd run circles around us for miles at a time.
