Everyone just expects she would have gone on and made better music, I think.

It's all about Denis Leary's theory about going out on top.....

But yeah, I can't listen to her either.

19. I can take Janis in small doses.
But I think that if there had been more female performers hawking a similarly bodacious strain of rock operating during the era she was extant, she would never have been lionized the way she has been. It's only because she was the most visible of a tiny handful of "chick" singers that she's considered such a legend.

38. Hey, it sucked that she OD'd & her career was cut short.
Janis blew out her voice singing above amplified rock--she was a folky back in Texas. She became a martyr, a symbol, etc.

I preferred Grace Slick.

9. Liz Phair, Tori Amos, Kathleen Hanna....
I've never understood why people like Liz Phair. She talks dirty, so fucking what? She can't sing and her melodies sound like the doggerel four-year-olds sing to themselves when bored. Total hype, no talent.

Tori Amos is a solemn joke without a punchline.

Kathleen Hanna: Take away the polemics and what do you have? A shrieking moron.

Plus, there's Alanis Morrisette, Avril Levigne, Pink....ah fuck it. Too many to mention.

I'd give it a B, though I like pop/rock a lot. Some of the younger artists have made better stuff of that type.

The little that I heard from Liz's upcoming CD suggests a return to form.

80. I like her too.
A lot. One of my favorites in fact. That's just my tastes though. She fits my taste. Doesn't have to fit everyone's taste though.

I also find that people who aren't actually in the music business (never wrote a song; let alone ever even sang a song) who criticize something to death because it isn't their tastes and do the whole I-have-no-life-so-I will-be-a-poser-music-snob irritating as Hell.

Lots of stuff I don't like, but I can respect musically. I loathe listening to hip-hop for instance, but I respect it. The only thing I hate is completely commercial (often lip-synced) crap.

declare me a genius because of my sexual frankness?

I couldn't agree with you more about the "talents" of those three.
But you just know what Phair's next move will be. After the inevitable failure of her current dance pop hot white mom schtick, she will "return to her indie roots" and declare that the previous foray was only an "ironic commentary on modern fame and celebrity" After all, she is an "intellectual" But just how smart does one have to be in order to pick up a freakin' art history degree from Oberlin?

Tori Amos is just Kate Bush for beginners. Very slow beginners. With training wheels.

I'm still laughing at your Hanna assessment.

RKZ, now I know why you got out of the critic game. You're just too damn honest. And good. :)

I despise Bjork. SHe's a total one trick pony; she's got maybe five or six sounds she can make with her voice, and they're all annoying. Her reputation as an avant-gardist is completely undeserved.

I always make sure to pronounce the "j" in her name just to piss off her rabid fans.

Cliché after cliché, lyrically and musically. And bonus marks against her for her attempt to sound "soulful" by imitating the raspy junkie-withdrawal yelping of Janis Joplin, and for allowing David Crosby's defective sperm to reproduce through her partner.

She sings like she is ready to produce the World's Largest Dump, at all times. :hurts:

That is the funny thing, in these discussions, I think women rockers are always held to some different standard than males, or when they try to change the genre somewhat, or are more "emotionally expressive" than male artists, they tend to get crap for it.

39. Confused here - are you calling U2's Bono a girlie man
or are you referring to Cher Bono?

Cause I know you're know you're not talking trash about my man Bono, now. That would really tick me off.

:grr:

call him a "rock singer".

damn, she's just too white for my taste.

Also, Olivia Newton John (if that's even considered rock)

48. yeah, while I like Sheryl Crow's politics, I really don't like her
voice.. I don't like high, strained voices. Her voice sounds so thin to me, it reminds me of lots of male singers I don't like, like Phil Collins, the whole REO Speedwagon/Air Supply high voicey thing.

But then again, I really love the voice of the lead singer from "Men At Work" and he's got the same higher voice like Phil Collins, but somehow not the tinniness.

83. Any of the following will induce vomiting:
Britney, Whitney, Christina, Gwen, Celine, Mariah, J-Lo, either of the Simpsons and the new "doublemint" twins.

Can't stand Courtney, I want to drive spikes into my face when I hear the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Rhimes or the chick who won the last American Idol.

In fact if the person in question has a poster available for purchase in Wal-Mart you can pretty much rest assured that I hate their friggin' guts.

85. All those crappy actresses who think they can sing
If Lindsay Lohan or Hillary Duff really know how to sing (without lip synching, back fillers, electronic distortion of their voice or just having someone else do the work) then I'm the Penthouse centerfold next month.

Geez, I hear in Paris Hilton has an album coming out. Problem with all this brain dead idiots is if you put them in a police lineup you couldn't tell them apart - anoectic and bleach blonde

105. To me Gwen Stefani is the worst. She acts like all of the
teenybobbers but is in fact twice their age.

Also, I love Janis Joplin. The reason so many female singers have tried to copy her is because she was the best. And yeah, dying early may have helped her legacy- she didn't go on to sing 'We Built This City' years later.
