"Flying Spaghetti Monster" routine.
Well, you really should know that I doubt that many of the Deists here would actually back down to that kind of atheism if you were to attack them in that way. Mostly, because you don't understand how our government gained it's authority to begin with.
Even before our Constitution, we had to claim authority to create our own government. Imagine you're Thomas Jefferson or George Washington: How do you found a new country, a country that affords unalienable rights to its people (those rights that are not deemed valid by agreement of consensus, but simply by the fact that they are part of humanity), but still recognizes the right to practice any kind of religion, or lack thereof? Here's what you do. You write this:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
Because, that way, the rights afforded to men (and women, although later on)- are not simply there because their elected representives tell them that they are there (LOL good thing, huh, in this day and age?). This way, the whole reason that the government is there in the first place is that the people give authority to the government, its existence and its governance. This way, the government *belongs to the people.* The government is a manifestation *of* the people. by the people, and for the people. It's not some Straussian "I'm your representative because I'm better than you and therefore I get to decide what rights you have" bullshit that some would think is best, in their ignorance. No, this way, very basic, civil rights were set out for the people of the country. Unalienable rights- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And then more detailed rights were gathered, based on that, beginning with the 1st Amendment. The government should recognize no religion in any manner, and should not oppress the free-flow of ideas in any manner (except for violent stuff, later on). And then, to ensure that the government belonged to the people, the 2nd Amendment was set out. Then the 3rd, the 4th, and so-on....
Anyway....if anyone is having problems with the way in which our country came into existence, you can just pick up any history book and have a read. This is how you build a government- you have to have some kind of basis to make a claim to governance. Read Thomas Paine. It's great stuff.
Keep in mind that the idea is NOT a basis wherein the government is centered around some kind of religion or spirituality for everyone to follow, or whatever. That's where some slower people are getting caught up, I think. While some kind of "Creator" is where the peoples' authority comes from in the original Declaration, the separation between church and state is made solid in the Constitution. The 1st Amendment is clear- but the peoples' authority to overthrow a God-appointed "king" is reserved for any time.
I'm hoping this is clear to anyone that wasn't getting it.
