Good alternatives to Tivo?

I'm against Tivo, since it is a subscription service. I just want a digital video recorder that I can treat like a VCR, and if possible combined with a DVD recorder (for archiving(. Suggestions?

Why spend needless money on yet another clunky console?

Under $100 for an 80gb hard drive (the tivo comes with a puny one anyway) and $150 or whatever for a WinTV PVR 250 and voila! :D

Probably. I don't watch tv, just buy the dvds. "Chef!" just came out...
