Rode 12 miles on my bicycle yesterday. Not a big deal for
a lot of people, but a minor victory for me; I only started riding again about a week and a half ago, and had not been able to ride for six years prior to that.

It feels really good; no balance problems (unlike when walking), and the PT I'd been doing to keep avoiding knee surgery seems to have worked well enough that the cartilage stays put when I'm riding.

And the little guy thinks it's great; he can ride all over town when I'm riding with him, so he gets to go everywhere. (He's not alllowed to ride on the main roads unless I'm with him.)

I think I'm getting addicted. I'm going to run out for a quick fifteen minutes now, in fact. (Yes, I have all kinds of lights and flashers for night riding).

Back in a bit...

1. Bravo!
Don't push it. Keep a comfort zone, gently testing your limits.

My philosophy for night riding: Despite lights and flashers, always assume you're invisible and ride accordingly.

5. Oh, I don't take chances. I have been hit by cars before.
And I do go easy. Pushing turns it into work.

2. Fun, isn't it?
Because of gas prices, I thought I should do some local stuff, like shopping, possibly commuting, by bike. I took my bike out yesterday for the first time in about two years. I rode about 18 miles and my butt is sore. I've got to build up my butt muscles.

8. No, what you need is to get a gel seatcover.
They work great.

I can't resist saying it: It saved MY ass!

16. Thank you, m'dear. We all have challenges to overcome,
as you know, and you've done as well or better with yours as I have with mine.

I respect that a lot, and appreciate your encouragement equally.

4. Good for you , my dear Redstone....
I know you're loving it...and I know you're being careful..

Burn off calories, have fun, sightsee at a gentler pace, all those good things ...

PLEASE be careful...as the other poster said, assume you're invisible...

Don't forget that thing you're supposed to send me...and the cook-book!

I've forgotten what I asked you for! Good grief...

9. It was the book of essays, that I still haven't finished editing.

But I'll get it done one day.

However, yes, you CAN order the cookbook now. Go to
http://balchlibrary.home.att.net
and you can download an order form.

You won't be sorry. I'll refund your fifteen bucks if you don't think it's worth the price.

13. I wasn't expecting you to buy any of the pictures, just to
enjoy them.

Besides, if you wanted a print of one of them, don't you think I'd just make one and send it to you?

17. Hey, there's a bike lane on the I-95 bridge. Maybe some day
I'll ride over and we'll have lunch, if you don't mind eating whith a sweaty tall guy across the table...

15. Thank you too much. It's always nice to get attaboys from
someone you don't know.

Shows how people are here at DU, always being encouraging to others. One of the reasons why I like this place so much,

19. Fabulous!
Be sure to join us over in the Exercise and Fitness forum!

I'm going to take an indoor cycling class tomorrow, and then next spring I'll try to ride a real bike (I haven't been on one in 20 years). I'm hoping to do a spring triathlon next summer.

20. Congratulations !!!
I haven't tried riding a distance like that in over 5 years, so I'm feeling jealousy, mixed with nostalgia.

I've missed riding my bike from when I was in college, more so recently with gas prices being what they are. You know you're in good shape when your friends tell you to meet them somewhere (roughly 10 miles or so away) and you can do it without getting winded or sweating heavily. One day I hope to be there again.

Once again, congratulations on the accomplishment.
