Accused Killer Doesn't Want Jury To See His Tattoos (PIC)

A Maine man, being retried for murder, doesn't want jurors to know he has a ring of thorns tattooed on his neck or horns tattooed on his head. (AP, 9/13/05)

7. Uh, the tattoos were supposed to distract you from that.
There's $300 he'll never see again.

18. It's a Port Wine stain
Fairly common, embarrassing as hell. Can be corrected with laser resurfacing...or you can just paint over the damn thing and call it good.

Now let me ask you something: if you had horns tattooed on your skull and didn't want a jury to see them, why would you get a fresh crewcut for your trial?

26. I worked with a guy once who had a port wine
stain right around his eye. People always thought he had been in a fight or something because it looked like he had a shiner all the time.

2. If there was ANYONE he wouldn't have wanted to see his tattoos
why would he put them in such an obvious location?

I have one that most people will never see. It's for me.

11. Actually, the question is...
why is he being retried for murder. Isn't that double jeopardy?

12. Not if there was a hung jury or some other procedural foul-up
Could also be that he is being retried after an appeal and remand, which is commonplace.

As far as the tattoos go, anyone stupid enough to do this should be required to live with the consequences of their stupidity. Boy, those are gonna look real sharp when he's gumming his applesauce at the retirement home.

13. Double jeopardy would only come in if he were acquitted.
If there was a hung jury or mistrial declared, he could be retried.

21. He was originally convicted
but it was overturned on appeal because the prosecutor made references to a t-shirt he reportedly was wearing on the night of the murder which said "Jesus is a c**t". The Maine Supreme Court decided that the jury was likely prejudiced by the shirt. He did wear turtlenecks and grew his hair in the first trial, but the prosecutor showed pictures of the tattoos.

15. The sad thing is, those most likely to tattoo their faces are the
same ones (depressed, abused, low self-esteem) least able to deal with the consequences.

16. Never get a tattoo where a judge can see it
Not sure it that is an exact quote or a paraphrase but Words of wisdom from Brian Setzer.

Found the quote in an interview. It's something his dad said to him
"Never get a tattoo where a judge can see it. If you're ever before a judge and he sees a tattoo on your neck or hands, he'll brand you a criminal."

24. Does the DOC offer turtlenecks in hugger orange?
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 05:01 AM by pinniped
If he were a Giants fan he could get a matching orange beanie, but I don't think the judge would like someone wearing a beanie in court.

He would fit in on Orange Friday at Pac Bell/SBC Park.

going to help get him sympathy. So I can understand his concern. Too bad he didn't think about possible consequences when he got them.

28. That's what I don't get
Why would anyone permanently put on their body a piece of "art" they would never hang on their wall. I don't something small and cute like a woman getting a chili pepper or rose design where it can't be seen by anyone she doesn't want seeing it, but why on the FSM's earth would anyone cover their arms or legs with some gross design? :puke: You are NOT improving on the FSM's work.
