1. Absolutely. She was one of the best persons in my life.
We lost her right before christmas last year and her passing has left a large hole in my life.

2. Indifferent to the first one, detest the current one. Good thing she lives
in South Africa, so I don't have to deal with her very much.

3. Yes, mine is a wonderful woman
who unfortunately had a serious fall a few years back. My wife also gets on very well with my mother.

We don't really get all the mother-in-law hating we see all the time.

10. You are very lucky. My MIL was an awful person.
My own mother was the MIL everyone wanted. Never judged a thing any of the inlaws did, incredibly supportive all the time. I hope to be that kind of MIL someday.

but if I could have chosen my in-laws, I would have picked differently.

33. I think I know the middle ground here
First spouse: I liked MIL, but she was too strong, even for me, and I have a strong personality...she could be viscous to my spouse, which really bothered me

Current spouse: she was so frail and full of physical probs, she couldn't get to know me...she died 2 years ago.

She's a very liberal, strong lady from a really small town. She hates Bush. She heads the habitat for humanity PR department where she lives. All around A+ lady. No knocks.

FEMA and the Red Cross are slow in responding and helping - don't let them off the hook!

Take care of yourself.

15. I do

though we have some extreme differences with regard to politics and religion.

I cook in her church's soup kitchen. It's a 7th Day Adventists church, and the soup kitchen feeds anywhere from 5 to 25 men and women each Sunday. I have a background in the foodservice industry and love to cook for people, so helping out there once a month is a real treat for me. Plus, the patrons really like my cooking, so it's all good.

They just received a new pastor, two actually as the pastor's wife is his associate pastor, and I haven't met them. The old pastor was very nice to me and accepted the fact that I am atheist and admitted that while he didn't share my world view, and felt sorry for me because I didn't share his (:eyes:) he was happy to let me cook in the kitchen.

I asked my mother in law about the new pastor and if my being in the soup kitchen would be any problem because of my atheism. She said "it better not be." Then went on to say there was a little issue when the old pastor was there because some of the other church attendees didn't feel "comfortable" with me in their church. Karl told them that soup kitchen duty was voluntary and that any one of them could volunteer to work with me and realize I wasn't the devil incarnate. My mother in law also laid into them saying that our job on Sunday mornings wasn't to spread the gospel, it was to feed the needy, and that me being there was a blessing because it meant she didn't have to cook and clean alone, and that I am a good cook and very personable with the homeless who come to dine. She then went on to explain that if the new pastor had a problem with me, he could find two new cooks for our assigned weeks in the kitchen.

Now that's a classy woman :)

So if you're reading this ma, and I know you sometimes cruise here -

She heard that I am going to be financially well off and her whole attitude towards me has changed.

I'm trying to graciously accept this for what it's worth.

Domineering, demanding, relentlessly critical. The only people she had nice things to say about were people who had bigger houses than her.

My ex was a perpetual 11 yo because of it. :eyes:

25. Tolerate is more the word,
and mutual verbal abuse dressed as teasing pretty much sums up our relationship.

She is a Republican, and a born-again-but-still-not-quite Christian. I am an athiest, so equal to Satan in her book.

26. I loved both of them
Lived with the first one for a year when the kids were little and that was tough - we're very much alike. Once the initial sparring was over, I got very fond of her and we remained close after her son and I divorced.

I only met my second MIL once - she was a lovely woman, very gracious and welcoming. She died of cancer just a couple of years later. :(

27. I did love my mother-in-law very very much...
She called me her daughter...my girls were her only grandchildren...

She'd had my husband late in her life, and as a consequence of that, has been dead for about 10 years. I miss her still....

28. MrScorpio....I adored my mother-in-law....she was the....
..most wonderful person.

She wanted everyone to feel good about themselves.

She was the most nonjudgmental person I ever met....and patient beyond belief with her
young daughters-in-law and her son-in-law.

She was one of my best friends and I think about her (she passed 10 years ago) every day...

30. My Mother In Law
is the most wonderful woman I have met!! Very smart woman, who has helped both my daughter and I to be healthy, whole, and loved. She is a N.D. and a nutritionist. Not only that, she gave birth and raised the man I love.

That being said, she was also a manipulative, controlling, enabling, catty snot. But she was nuts about my sons, so that was nice.

32. Like her, but bemused by her.
She is... different. Has recovered mostly from her moderate republicanness, (She hates Bush), but she's still a 2nd grade special ed teacher who treats her son (my DH) like he's still 11, and hasn't quite understood that while, yes, DH did leave his ex and become part of my life quickly after that, their marriage had long dried up and blown away.

She's okay. Glad we don't live near her.

I'm glad that harpy hated my guts, because the feeling was mutual. Drove my FIL into a bottle and was pissed that I wasn't going to let her daughter do the same to me.

Last I heard, 5-6 years ago, she had inoperable Cancer.
