When I posted in the Lounge, I noticed a whole different vibe; relaxed and funny. There weren't any body parts laying about, no blood all over the wall. No wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I looked around and said to myself, I'm home.

With the thousands who are registered here...and even within the DUL, I feel I don't fit in anywhere. Within DUL, there are folks who post their lives culturally, politically, etc..I understand them. Most often, I appreciate their comments about "best album" or best cartoon, etc, because I'm not far off the major demo/psychographics of DUL.

But like any large group, I'm not part of the "click" (I know, DUer's think they are anti-click, but there are peeps who graviate towards another partly to longevity). I'm lonely sometimes. However, I feel like Wes Clark's attitude "Be what you can be" and occasionally, I'm in a groove with a few.

I still love the DUL, and I wouldn't contribute to DU each month if I didn't see the value of the webazine scene.

I've responded to many posts here, including yours JJ occasionally. You've posted "good morning" type threads, I believe. And I always enjoy what you say. Program's radio show is another good draw.

The other night when the Concert for Katrina Survivors was on, Xmas74 started a thread. I don't think more than 10 DU'ers actually posted, but we had a long thread because we all enjoyed each others' company. Wish we had more threads like that because when it comes to old music s**t, I can post with the best of them.

in that people are a mixed bunch. In all my experiences with the various types of interaction available via the interconnected ether, you'll find morons and you'll find the brilliant; you'll find juvenile people, and people who embody human kindness; you'll find the laid back and the uptight, and every possible variation of personality.

Over the last several years, many online communities I frequent have been over-run with people who seem impenentrably Freeperesque. I belong to an online journaling site resplendant in foolish, stubbornly jingoistic crap. I frequent a couple of usenet groups and where previously the conservatives were easily shouted down with logic, they've now banded together in great numbers and spew screed unrestricted, - shouting down saner voices instead.

I come to the Lounge for the sense of community. I like being able to share conversations both deep and deeply silly with people who have a core belief that racism is wrong, that individuals are at least as valuable as corporations, religion has no place in government, that wars ought to be an option of last resort.

I often read, sometimes post and have repeatedly chosen to moderate in GD. As with my posting in the Lounge, I have a mental 'killfile' that causes me to avoid being sucked into discussion with people who repeatedly argue points I find absurd and poorly thought out. GD has many bright and charming people, too. But tends to value argument as a means to enlightment rather than cooperative discussion. That's not wrong, but it's much less conducive to fostering a sense of community.

I come here for the people and the sense of community. I come here to feel the world is still basically sane.
