Too Much Time on My Hands, nay, the entire Paradise Theater album, by Styx is just about worst rock and roll single/album/experience ever.

Can't believe I used to listen to this disco/softrock dreck over and over and over again as a wee lad and thought it was cool. And that goes double for Kilroy was Here (but that one sort of sucked right out of the gate so it's not as bad as Paradise Theater).

1. Mmmm I am going to have to stick with "Boston" on that one
Granted Paradise Lost was horrible but I have to give it to Boston for not only being not that new or interesting even at the time but its longevity of still not being new interesting or worthplaying anywhere but yet there it is to kill yet a few more minutes in our minds before our pod is unplugged.

2. I actually like the first Boston record... even now
The production still impresses me, and it's what, 30 years later? There are some wicked duds on Boston though, but the good tracks overshadow them.

Assuming you have vinyl, it's better listening to the stylus running across the paper label of Paradise Theater for 20 minutes a side than to listen to the actual album itself.

at the time the concept was pretty cool (still think that today) although it never moved me like Grand Illusion or Cornerstone.

8. I'd have to agree with Matcom on this one.
Context is a big part of the music, esp if you were alive at the time.

Dennis DeYoung's ass for invading their turf with that one. (John Denver would have stood at the alley mouth to watch for the fuzz.)

7. Perhaps you missed Van Halen's "Diver Down."
About 29 minutes, four or five covers. That was the worst screwing I ever took from a rock band and I never bought another album of theirs again.

and same thing... except I fell asleep half way through the solo and woke up to "Goodnight Drive Safely!"

Of course this was Van Hagar... I saw DLR later the same year when he had Vai in his lineup at the Providence Civic Center and man did he rock!

Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 09:07 AM by Ron Mexico
the guitar work on "Women and Children First" ("Take Your Whiskey Home" was a kickass tune). I can't remember the name of the fourth album, but it's the one with "Unchained" on it.

All things considered, three of the first four albums were well worth owning. The second one blew goat.

27. I respectfully dissent.
As so-called 'soft rock' goes, it is pretty well done. If you don't like disco-esque pop music, you won't like Paradise Theater. Kilroy, on the other hand, was a musical suppository right out of the gate. They should have saved the B side for their apology.

39. "Too Much Time on My Hands" is good
That's actually one of the songs I would consider playing to a Styx-hater to prove to them that not all Styx is bad. (My top choice would probably be "Queen of Spades" or mostly anything off of Pieces of Eight.) I will agree with most that Kilroy Was Here is nothing great, but I think Paradise Theatre is alright. "Nothing Ever Goes as Planned" was a good non-hit single, and "The Best of Times" is cheesy but powerful.
