So what's the difference between a "good" Pro-wrestler and a "jobber"? |
|
Is it their mic skills? Personality, but what is the seal with some of their "personalities"?

1. It's all about the fans. |

Looks, act, gimmicks. Either easily loved or easily hated. They're all stars now, as there's only so much pro-wrestling to go around. A decade or two ago, you could see preliminary matches where some star would beat the crap out of some overmatched slob for 10 minutes.
Ahhh...Jimmy "The Superfly" Snuka off the top rope onto Jose Luis Rivera...

but it seems like all the jobbers i have seen have either been newbies, out of shape older wrestlers, or guys with no charisma.
but then again, sometimes you get a guy like spike dudley, who makes his career jobbing, but has a following because he's talented.

3. Yeah - Spike can make anyone look good |

The guy is a bumping machine. He could have an entertaining match with a broomstick.
The jobber thing came from old wrestling TV, before emergence of the national promotions, where the Big Star would wrestle a nobody and beat the tar out of him so they could save Big Star Heel vs. Big Star Babyface for the show at the local arena. When WWE uses old-style jobbers, they usually don't even get a ring introduction on-air.
If I were god of the wrestling universe (IOW, Vince McMahon) I would job out Trips to Rey Mysterio three weeks in a row. I LOATHE Hunter.

but is still involved in the writing and behind the scenes. He still sucks - it's all about ME ME ME whether the fans give a shit or not. The Giant Ego will be back for the first Smackdown on the new network - USA?

i wondered about that USA "characters welcome" campaign thingy with Cena in it. is it gonna be just smackdown, or raw too?
sooner or later vince has gotta realize that his declining ratings are partly due to steph and trips - that's one of the reasons i stopped watching - that and the constant bimbo contests: tits and ass are one thing, but damn, somehow vince overdoes it so much, that even i turn the channel.

USA refused to pick up Velocity, the Smackdown answer to Sunday Night Heat because they don't want to promote a rival show.

In order to win, someone has to lose. Pro wrestling is all about the preformance, and the fans. As long as the fans have a good time, and enjoyed themselves, it doesn't matter who wins or loses.
But that being said, the difference is how the promoter sees you, and how he wants to utilize what you bring to the table.
If he thinks you are a great enhancement talent, then you'll spend time counting the skylights.
If he thinks you can get over with a particular gimmick, he will attempt to get you over, and if it happens, it happens. If not, they move on to the next guy.
Perfect example, Triple H. In WCW (as Terra Rizing, and as his pre Hunter Hearst Helmsley gimmick whose name I can't think of), he was an enhancement talent. But he gets to WWE, puts in his time (while counting his share of skylights), and five years later, he is at the top of the game.
It's a combination of what's given to you, and what you do with it.

Jobbers were pretty much "fed" to big-name wrestlers, mostly on TV tapings. Usually you only saw the bigger-name types wrestle each other in big event matches or untelevised shows. They don't do that as much anymore, since most wrestling programs these days rely heavily on ratings.

6. They are like the Christians fed to the lions. |

Job is just to get their asses kicked.
Like Bad News Brown versus Armando Franklin. They usually wear unimaginative singlets with one shoulder strap and plain boots. They dont' do too much fanfare. Mostly just pump one arm in the air when there name is called and perhaps do the rope-stretching thing by grabbing onto them and leaning back.

GREATEST jobber of all time--Jake "The Milkman" Milliman.
That guy could take a beatdown week in, week out. His only competition would be Kenny "The Sodbuster" Jay or possibly Tom "Rocky" Stone.
In these days of national tv contracts the true pure Jobber is a dying breed. Even Hurricane gets to win every now and then.

15. Was Arnold Skoaland a jobber? |

He used to wrestle a big name and beat him up real good---until at the very end the bad guy would cheat and win the match.
