my son actually says this all the time now, and the origin is kind of cool, which we learned watching "Animal Icons: It Came From Japan" on Animal Planet (at least 100 times). When the American production company was redubbing Godzilla Raids Again (AKA Gigantis the Fire Monster) they kept coming across the phrase (phonetically spelled here) "Bakayado" which translates to "silly fool". They needed an English phrase that sort of matched and after much hemming and hawing came up with "Banana Oil".
I can only imagine how many of the preschoolers he sits in class with scratch their heads when he says it.
