How do you feel about depressing movies? |
|
I absolutely hate depressing movies and I used to diligently avoid watching them, but recently (the last two years or so)I have stopped avoiding them. I haven't gotten to the point when I seek out depressing movies, but when for some reason one crosses my path I will watch.
What about the rest of you, anyone feel like I used to? Using native logic I would guess that more liberals would end up on the other side of the spectrum, if only because of the liberal tendency to embrace an hard truth over an easy lie.
How do you feel about depressing movies and why?

5. anything that really hits you in the gut |

I'm not talking about movies like Armageddon here. I'm referring to movies like Schindler's List or Boys Don't Cry.

Alot of my favorite films are "depressing", I guess; my music too, to a crertain degree. Depressing for depressing's sake is a turn-off, though; it has to have substance in it's soul.

4. I hate depressing movies. |
|
I also hate "girly" romance movies. I will watch depressing movies in the vein of Schindler's List and F911, because they are informative and relevant, but I will not cry over Bette Midler, in Beaches. Shit, I've got enough to whine about in my back pocket.

6. I don't like to be emotionally manipulated by film... |
|
never mind that I will knowingly watch Joy Luck Club and cry my eyes out--willingly. That's not the same as knock down, drag out depressing.
I will probably never watch Mystic River or Leaving Las Vegas for this very reason--I've never been in the mood to feel quite that bad. When I am, I read or watch the news--that's enough to make me absolutely catatonic.

|

11. I used to feel the same way as you |
|
but it is movies like "Mystic River" that changed my mind. In fact now if I can appreciate the movies as a work of art, I will even go the extra step and allow myself to be totally emotionally vulnerable to it, and appreciate them even though they make me feel like crap for a while.
