Oh, this is hilarious. I just saw the word "pescatarian" for the
first time, to quote: "...pescatarian (ie, a vegetarian who eats fish)."

"A vegetarian who eats fish?" Ohhhkay.

Fish are damned funny vegetables, they are; plant one in your garden, and no matter HOW much you water and fertilize it, it's NOT going to grow. It won't even sprout.

I think we need a new definition for this word: Pescatarian: A person who is clearly not a vegetarian, but wants a hifalutin label that makes him or her sound like one, sort of.

1. I'm a pescatarian.
I don't eat anything with hair, fur or feathers, but I do eat fish.

4. Well, there's nothing wrong with the word itself, it's just that the
definition I quoted is strange. Either you're a vegetarian or not.

Your definition as stated in your post is MUCH clearer and doesn't try to make you sound like something you're not.

If that writer had defined the word the way you did, I wouldn't have made the post ridiculing him.

8. You are right...
A person who eats fish is not a vegatarian, no matter how much they may claim to be. (And I have heard a lot of them.) I once had a waitress who chided me for not wanting to eat a dish that had chicken in it because I was a vegetarian -- she claimed that lots of "vegatarians" she knew ate chicken! :D

2. Pescatarian = utilitarian (Benthamite, that is) approach to vegetarianism.
"It's okay to eat cold-blooded animals. They don't feel pain. Oh, and milk and eggs are fine. You're not killing anything for them. And don't talk to me about the senseless slaughter of unborn chickens, please."

5. Fish DO feel pain. But my real point is that fish
are not vegetables.

6. That was sarcastic...
which is why I put it in quotes. Milk and eggs and cheese aren't vegetables, either. Lot of "vegetarians" kind of stretch the definition.

11. Boy, do I feel dumb. I thought it might be sarcastic but
wasn't sure.

Hey, if they only eat "cold-blooded animals," do you suppose lizards are considered vegetables, too?

Not that I'm telling anybody what to eat or not to; it's none of my business. I just appreciate acuracy in language.

12. Yeah. It's kind of ridiculous, really.
And then there are the vegetarians who wear leather...if they won't eat cattle, but WILL wear their skins, does that mean that fur is okay? They seem to have a problem with consistency as well as accuracy...

17. I know a lot of vegetarians who wear...
only used leather products picked up at second hand stores. I really don't have a problem with that, no additional animal was harmed or resources used.

Also, many folks think vegetarians are wearing leather when in fact they are wearing variations of "pleather". Bob Barker was being slammed on an old Phil Donahue show for being a hypocrite for wearing leather while promoting animal rights. He whipped his belt off to point out his belt and shoes were both of non-animal origins.

19. Second-hand leather is STILL leather, though.
Kind of like trying to legitimise owning a shrunken head because you didn't kill the poor bastard, you bought it off of a headhunter in New Guinea for $100. Reasoning makes no sense, if one accepts the, shall we say, moral basis of vegetarianism (as distinct and separate from any presumed health benefits).

20. That happens.
Occasionally I get the "oh, and what about that leather purse" question, and, yeah, it's fake. Shoes, belts, briefcase, fake, fake, fake.

The fakes are pretty good these days, though!:7

"Five a Day for Good Health"

1. Lizard
2. Snake
3. Turtle
4. Alligator
5. Carp

If you chop them all up you can make a salad and get your nutrition all at once. LOL

13. Most vegetarians abstain from meat, but not all other animals products.
It's usually just about the flesh.

Now vegans, on the other hand...

9. In the middle ages it was thought that fish grew in the same manner
As fruit/vegetables (hence the French term fruits de la mer) - this is also why in the olden days Catholics couldn't eat meat, but could eat fish on Fridays.

This has carried over, and there are lots of people who decline meat for ethical reasons, but still eat fish.

15. it seems like this should be someone who eats *only* fish,
and nothing else. No vegetables, no grains, no other animals...just fish. Or would that be a "pescavore"? Kinda like a polar bear, or a seal.

Anyway, I agree...that always drives me crazy. Like, "Oh, I'm a vegetarian, but I eat chicken." Huh?

claim to be vegetarians and then add that they eat fish and/or chicken; neither of which are vegetables. Colour me boggled.
