I need prayers and good thoughts...
the doctor just called my best friend...they think my 16 year old niece may have a pituitary tumor. They are gonna do an MRI on Monday. We can use all the positive vibes y'all have got.

4. According to this general source, they are usually curable.
www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/pituitary_tumors/pituitary_tumors.htm

I knew someone who was cured by surgery. The article says the tumors are in the "center of the brain"--scary! But the surgeon got it by going through the roof of the mouth, causing minimal brain damage.

Good thoughts from me.

7. Thanks...
for the link and the good thoughts.

Her grandfather had a pituitary tumor years ago and had surgery and was fine. So we're crossing our fingers and hoping for the best.

22. My friend just had one....
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 01:25 PM by Lisa0825
Believe it or not, they are very common. In fact I read that judging by people who died of other causes and were autopsied, up to 1/5 of the population could have an undiscovered asymptomatic pituitary tumor. They are almost ALWAYS benign, and the only reason to treat them is if they are secreting hormones that are affecting the patient or if they grow too much and put pressure on the nerves/tissue around them. Sometimes they can be treated with drugs, other times with surgery. The surgery is highly effective and safe. They go in through the nose/mouth, so there is no scarring. My friend was also able to get her deviated septum fixed while under, and she is doing just fine now. I know tumors are scary, and anything in/near the brain is scary, but don't worry too much, because chances are good that she'll be fine.

30. You're quite welcome... I know how you feel...
I was terrified when I found out about my friend's tumor. She's only 26, and had just gotten engaged the day before she found out. I was in tears at work the next day, so I went on a research binge to ease my concern, and felt better. She just had her surgery a few weeks ago, and everything I read turned out to be accurate per her situation.

I didn't want to mention it on top of everything else...but the kiddo's grandmother and momma both have MS and they think she may be in teh very very early stages of it herself. So we've got that worry in the backs of our minds on top of this.

I hope your brother turns out to be ok.
