TOKYO (Reuters) - The oldest person in the world, Mitoyo Kawate, died in Japan on Thursday at the age of 114, two weeks after receiving the designation.

Kawate died of pneumonia in hospital in the southwestern city of Hiroshima, a Japanese health ministry official said.

It was not immediately clear who was now the world's oldest person.

The ministry official said that Japan's oldest woman was now 113-year-old Ura Koyama, who lives in the southwestern city of Fukuoka.

2. As an Actuary. I've noticed a high mortality rate among the oldest persons
Indeed the one that just died was named "oldest" on Oct 31 - and did not last 2 weeks.

7. It depends on what you're doing
I remember my late grandmother spent a summer ballooning across Europe with a group of total strangers when she was at the relatively advanced age of 95. And only her final illness prevented her from traveling to China a few weeks before her death. And she continued to practice law, more or less, throughout.

If you're lucky enough to be able to craft a meaningful existence, then you can live forever. Otherwise, what's the point?
