the 1971, black and white, version of King Lear with Paul Scofield as Lear. It is awesome - utterly unlike any other version I've seen. Very stark - dark and cold like the North of England, where the story takes place, if memory serves.
Edit: Oh man, I missed that Polanski option. That was pretty darn cool too.
Naw, I'm sticking with Kurosawa.
But then, Brannagh's Henry V was awesome too.
