he looks smooshed because the avatar only allows 48x48 pixels. you uploaded a 75x150 pixel image, so the DU software smooshed it.

You Could use it as a signature picture and maintain the integrety and sanctity of your image...there are size limits on that too, but your image is within the parameters.

14. I just did a google search until I found an image

I thought would work. But when I saved it and then loaded it here, it looked weird.

Ladyhawk got the one that was small enough to successfully be uploaded.
