69. it is quite fun.. just requires a fair bit of space.
The mens distance record is over a mile and womans is like 1380 meters... so if you shoot angled upwards, the arrow can travel really far that you can't see it.

I have brightly coloured fletchings and nocks so that i can find the arrows if i shoot far. Outdoor archery without a target butt, takes serious room... like 100 meters is just an average twang.

I don't use a sight as it takes the instinct out of it, but i love that it is a silent sport... My dogs love following round as we go to collect arrows... its a giant dogwalk from their perspective.

Modern materials have made bows more powerful than they ever were in the middle ages, but instinct with wind and distance is still just as much an art as it ever was. Zen and the art of archery and all that...

87. Yep, archery is great!
I took up target archery last year and am loving it!

I shoot recurve throughout the year and longbow in the Summer (well,
April to October anyway). Will have to go across to a field archery
club sometime to try that out but I'm not in a hurry - just love the
satisfaction of hitting at 100 yards with my longbow (though it would
be even nicer if more arrows ended up in the target than the grass...)

(Other hobbies include music of different flavours, glass engraving,
and dabbling in all sorts of pastimes).

I shot most of those with a Canon G3 digital camera using its built-in macro feature.

The advantage I had was those were taken in butterfly conservatories in Indianapolis, Huntsville and Niagra Falls. It's much harder in nature, but I do manage to get some off even then. Lots of patience.

Currently multi-track recording a re-orchestration of Beethoven's 6th symphony for "toy orchestra" consisting of 6 harmonicas, small accordian, 1 ocharina, 2 tin whistles, 1 washtub bass, 1 set of bottle/jug pan pipes, 1 plastic recorder, and assorted PVC pipe trumpet/horn thingies.

So far it sounds awesome considering it's being performed on toy instruments.

67. Paragliding, skiing, dogs
I fly paragliders in the summer, ski in the winter and take care of my Bernese Mountain Dogs all the time (or, they take care of me).

I used to paddle whitewater kayaks, but since I learned to fly 7 years ago my boats haven't left the garage.

81. Drawing, reading and driving around.
I like to drive around town just to clear my thoughts when I'm stressed, or to relax, in a way. I like to draw all sorts of different types of things, from architectural sketches to abstract art.

I often surf DU & do on-line research at the same time.

90. One warning - it is easy to become preoccupied with it.
I knew I had to back off when my bride accused me of being more interested in my dead family than my living one.

That stung, and upon personal reflection, I could see where she was coming from. I had piles of family data piled up all over the place, under the sofa & bed, etc. I would get letters, e-mail, & phone calls from all over the country almost daily.

I am scheduling my time much more carefully now and have even included my wife & three little boys in the hunt, when possible.

It is a lot of fun, and it requires the skills of a detective at times - helps keep the mind limber.

89. Refinish furniture...
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 11:16 AM by populistmom
I don't do that often, but it's my favorite thing to do. That along with other household projects. I'm going to be installing some flooring and painting soon also which I find fun and creative. I read as much as I can, but usually political stuff rather than fiction. I occasionally do sewing or crafty types of things (usually crafty things involving floral arrangement stuff). I like to write on occasion, sometimes poems, usually just random life thoughts.

91. Hapkido, writing fiction, all things daikaiju (giant monster)
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 12:55 PM by BigMcLargehuge
though, to be fair Hapkido is a lifestyle more than a hobby, and writing fiction I hope to make a career out of.
