Our friend Hilda was visiting for a week. She's a German lady in her early 90s, but you'd never know it. Oh you'd know she's German alright. She speaks English with an Anglo/Teutonic accent. Her language teachers were English nuns.
You'd never guess she was 90, though. She looks and moves like a well preserved 70. At about 5' 4" and 90 lbs., she's as tough as whit leather. But one of the kindest people I know.
Anyway... We went to our local farmer's market. As we passed a bin of rutabagas Hilda exclaimed "MAHNGUHL-VUHZUHLS!". "Hunh?" "MAHNGUHL-VUHZUHLS! I haven't seen them since we were in Africa." Hilda has led a very colorful and interesting life. "Oh, we call them "rutabagas". "Tonight I shall cook you some MAHNGUHL-VUHZUHLS!" And she did.
She fried some bacon and chopped it up. In the bacon drippings she sauteed a whole minced onion. Mashed a half dozen cloves of garlic, and in they went. She cubed the mangel-wurzel, kind of like hash-brown size, and tossed them in. Stirred it around good and put a cover on the pan. Liberal dose of salt and pepper as they cooked down. Best damn rutabagas I ever had.
Hilda can come back anytime. :-)
