Interesting trivia about "Plan Nine From Outer Space"
I watched it last night for, I admit it, the first time ever. Although I generally agree with the hysterical cheesiness of the whole thing, there were actually quite a few interesting moments, and some great dialogue.

One quick fun fact: Plan Nine appears to be the first flick to make real use of what can be called the "universal translator". It was indeed an integral part of the "storyline". (Plan Nine came out in 1959, btw.)

The next known use of the concept did not occur until January of 1967, when the Star Trek episode "Arena" aired. (To refresh your memory, this was the epic Kirk/Gorn battle.)

31. If I could just quickly interrupt this thread-jack to say two things:
1) I think it's "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians."

2) I respectfully disagree, I think "Manos" was far more horrid.

2. Didn't the star of Plan Nine die during filming?
And was replaced by a guy who didn't show his face for the whole second half of the film?

Or am I mixing it up with another really awful movie?

9. Proud owner of PNFOS on VHS tape!
I believe Ed Wood wanted to make a vampire movie and shot a few minutes of Lugosi coming out of his house in his Dracula cape. After Lugosi died, Wood would later incorporate this footage in Plan 9.

The best quote I read about Plan 9 was something like "This film appears to have been made in somebody's garage..."

35. Helluva topic for a '50s flick...
and his bio on IMDB sez it "showed his absolute lack of talent."

Bio also sez not only did he brag about wearing red bra and panties as they stormed the beach, his first wife threw him out of the house on their wedding night when she caught him in said bra and panties.

Wotta guy-- got his teeth knocked out in close combat with the Japanese at Arawak, got the Silver and Bronze stars, and purple hearts for the teeth and having his legs machine-gunned.

And he's a transvestite.

BTW, he made his living after he got out of the Marines by being a carnival geek-- the guys who bites the heads off chickens. Probably made more money doing that than from his movies.

I have seen "Plan 9..." and I don't know if it's really worse than, say, "They Saved Hitler's Brain," it is most assuredly a very bad movie.

36. I didn't know about his silver and bronze stars.
I like Ed Wood movies, they really were interesting to watch.

I have seen many movies that were worse. To bad he didn't live to see his movies become so popular.

What I liked about Ed was that he wanted to make movies and he did, and did the best he could with what he had to work with.

16. Besides that
He was a former Marine. I think he said that he once went into battle wearing ladies' underwear.

Some more trivia: Lyle Talbot, another one of the stars of the movie, is the father of SALON's David Talbot and of Stephen "Gilbert" Talbot of "Leave It To Beaver" fame.

A 6-disc Ed Wood DVD set at a budget price! (Did you expect any other sort of price?)

I love Ed Wood movies. Even unintentional humor is still pretty damn funny, and 10 minutes of any Ed Wood movie has more laughs than all of Adam Sandler's movies put together.

I just recently picked up the DVD set. One disc is a good documentary about Ed's life and career.

Unlike the usual puff piece Hollywood docu, this one has some pissed-off people in it. Bela Lugosi's son blasts Ed Wood for exploiting his father. Also disgruntlement from Lyle Talbot and others.

Oh, and "Vampira" hints that Orson Welles gave her the clap...

The "Plan 9" DVD also has a nice, long special feature about the making of that masterpiece.

The movies are:
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Bride of the Monster
Glen or Glenda
Jail Bait
Night of the Ghouls
The Haunted World of Ed Wood (the documentary)

Link to the Amazon writeup (not a commercial endorsement--I bought mine locally at Tower because I prefer instant gratification. And it was cheaper there...)
